Need a 2 channel receiver

I have a good friend who has a pair of JBL L100's that he bought new when he was 18.  He has had the woofer refoamed and he refinished them and wants a receiver.  He has an old TT (don't knwo what kind), and CDplayer and I think he wants to be able to use an ipod, internet streaming etc.  He also wants to be able to go to surround in the future.

Don't know a price range, probably $200 to $600 or so.  Room size is probably not too big.

Any ideas?  I got 1 response in HT on this.

That Yamaha would be a great buy. But if you may need a separate phono preamp to hook up the turntable.

For $650, this will do very well now and in the foreseeable future for what you are describing...

That is correct, a separate phono preamp would be required, but I believe this cost would be fairly minimal and worthwhile.

Thanks.

Any other receivers?  I'd like to give him some choices.  Maybe a lower price that soemoen has experiance with.

Try this one. $349 direct from HK and free shipping:

Convince him that he should stay away from surround for music! Nice two channel receiver would be better.

That looks good, it's like they went back to the old (great sounding)  HK twin powered line.

I would like to hear that model.

I agree about keeping it 2 CH, you could always go that way later with a different setup.

I like this line of Harmans. I have an older (but pretty similar) 3380 which I love. Good honest sound. I haven't A/B'd it against any of my NAD amps but it does the job. And it's versatile with vintage gear like those JBLs.

Yamaha R-N500. Old school (built in phono pre, a loudness control, tape loop you can monitor) w/ networking and digi inputs. 80 watts/ch, prolly enough for those old JBLs, they're on the sensitive side.

The HK's and the Outlaw look good.  HK has a newer model.

I think that internet streaming and the ability to hook up an external HD and be able to stream from it are going to be important.

The HK 3770 might be more what he wants but it doesn't appear to have separate amplifiers like the the 3390. But the 3770 has a DAC. Same price, so he can make the decision as to which better suits his needs. A $99 Apple TV will allow him to stream whatever he wants and has a digital connection. Just some thoughts.
