Onkyo TX-NR838

looks like this will be atmos ready. also a price tag or 950 isn't too bad on amazon.

what are yalls thought on it? I am currently building a la scala trio / kpt 200 7.2 theater room. think this would be a good idea along with adding 2 or 4 ceiling speakers?

Yeah, after looking further into it, it will only support 7.2.2. I'm looking for 7.2.4, I'll be amping them all anyway, so it doesn't matter if they are powered or not.

On a side note, what speakers do yall recommend to use on the ceiling? I have an 8 foot ceiling.

I think the CDT-5800-C II's would be great.  Part of my reasoning on this particular one is due to what was said at the round-table discussion at CEDIA like a month ago.  They basically said that Atmos should be ran full range, and in terms of ceiling speakers, you better get some bigger full range speakers that can handle some power because "they're going to be pushing a lot of air through them".  To me that didn't sound like the typical THX setup of 80hz and above would be the goal.  As of this moment these coaxial 8's are the largest ceiling speakers with the best bass response that Klipsch is offering.

I would never give up Audyssey XT32 for more channels.
 you ever thought about switching to a receiver with dual sub eq vs the regular sub eq in the 818?

I have always used subs equidistant, either front corners or front/rear walls with me in the center (front/rear wall\ centers were best). With symmetrical usage, assymetrical PEQ's and delays have not been necessary, but I won't ever say never.

Marantz and Denon would be my choice, along with Yamaha when they do theirs. I would never ever buy another Onkyo again. Especially since they can't even keep their HDMI Boards working. Not to big of a confidence booster for their new products when their not so old lines can't stay working. 3 units and all 3 had issues with HDMI. I personally don't think ATMOS will even be usable for the next few years,except for a few and far in between movies to dangle a carrot in front of us. That,the lack of 4K video, and the lack of the younger people out there streaming most of their video doesn't seem to be a big booster for any of the above mentioned. In my opinion it will only be viable for people who are into Analog, vinyl, and the older generation of people who still enjoy the sound quality as it's supposed to sound. I don't see the average person having the money to upgrade their receiver, speakers,layouts,blue ray players,etc to be able to push this.I know my kids and their friends alone prefer to watch things and listen to music on their tablets or phone.

What is the nomenclature for 7.2.4?

7 would be L/C/R, 2 surround, 2 surround rear.

2 would be 2 subs?

4 = what?

+++

I have an Onkyo TX-NR717.  It is on the recall list for the bad HDMI daughter board, but ONLY if it fails with no sound on all channels!  Onk already knows it is a defective board, so it almost has to be a matter of WHEN it fails, not IF it fails.

FYI my 717 has operated perfectly in the two years I have had it.

4 is the number of speakers going in the ceiling, or the "angled" speakers that will go on top of the mains and surrounds facing up towards the ceiling to "bounce" off of it.

So 7.2.4 is 7 channels, 2 subs, and 4 "Atmos efects" speakers

The models with the most problems were the 709,717 for your model if I'm not mistaken.

I had the 609,709,and 809 (twice).The problem was they used cheap resistors and capacitors. There is an addition you can add onto the board to bulk it up.It disperses the heat better as they have issues when heating up due to the lack of heat being able to escape the inside of the unit. Try running an external fan if you want to extend the unit, or if you can get Onkyo to exchange the board do that. They will also offer a "trade up" on the next model up.

Some specs I've seen have been 7.1.4 while normal surround is 7.2. But, it's really the same thing, just because they say 7.1.4 doesn't necessarily mean you only have one sub output. They're purposely trying to confuse everybody I think. :) Really all sub material is one channel anyway so I guess that's why they do that.

I am using a Denon x5200w with a few Emotiva amps for my Atmos setup and it works amazingly.  I am running 13 conencted speakers; 7.1.4 for Atmos using Top Fronts and Top Rears and then I have wides connected for DTS Neo and Audyssey DSX but I never seem to use either of those modes. Dolby Atmos is legit and even the Dolby Surround Upmix adds new life to my bluray collection.

Be advised...the Onkyo receivers are the only ones that are HDCP 2.2 compliant....meaning if you upgrade to 4k-uhd - you won't have to buy a new receiver!

They only have one or two HDCP 2.2 compliant ports which are limited to 10Gbps just like HDMI 1.4. Meaning they are not capable of full 4k @ 60fps with 4:4:4 Chroma. This limitation is due to the chipsets available for the 2014 models; One has full HDMi 2.0 18Gbps capabilities but no HDCP 2.2HDCP 2.2 has not even been chosen as the defacto replacement for current HDCP and no devices currently use it. It is likely HDCP 2.2 (or 2.3, 2.4, etc) will be implemented once 4K Bluray players hit but that still remains to be seen. The 2015 Crop of AVRs will likely have ports capable of full 18Gbps as well as HDCP 2.2 as that chip now exists. Having said that, it is likely any 4k Bluray player will have two HDMI outs (at least any that I would buy) and you can use one for audio out to an AVR and one for the Video out to your HDCP 2.2 compliant display. I currently have 2 Samsung 4K TVs hooked up through 2 2014 Denon AVRs (s900w and x5200w) with no issues. Any 4K content is distrubuted via built in TV Apps or Samsung's UHD Drive, neither of which require HDCP 2.2 at the moment.
