Amp recommendations for Jubilee

My friend is looking for amplifier recommendations for the Jubilee bass bins. He has been using a 2A3 for the horns, McIntosh for the bass bins and a pair of Behringer EP4000 for the BassMaxx sub horns. You could say he likes dynamic and concert level sound. He now wants to try a pair of solid state monoblocks for the bass bins and use the McIntosh just as a pre. I was thinking maybe Emotiva XPA-1, D-Sonic M3-1500M, Red Dragon M1000, or possibly an Adcom GFA-5802. What do you think would work with this rig?

Wow very nice looking setup. Wish your friend lived closed so i can take a listen:)

The adcom gfa-565 monoblock power amplifier looks like very nice monoblocks, received very good reveiw on stereophile. I know the crown k2 has also been used for the jub bass bin. Maybe also a Bryston?

Good luck and hope i helped,

Alex

Is he using active crossover(s)?  If not, I do recommend time alignment since this will create a fairly pronounced amplitude and phase hiccup in the crossover band (~425 Hz in my system) which you can measure and hear if not corrected.

I've also found that the height of the K-402 horn being so far above sitting height is an issue in terms of SQ, especially with 8' ceilings.  Placing the subs behind the Jubs with their mouths in the corners, then EQing everything relatively flat with rising amplitude toward the low end makes a great deal of difference in terms of perceived SQ, probably much more than any amplifier difference at treble frequencies.

As far as amp recommendations are concerned, I'd recommend looking at Nelson Pass' independent company First Watt, at his SIT-1 or SIT-2 design which is tailor-made for this type of application and has a bit higher output impedance than his F3 or F5 models, which adds to the "magic" that you hear with SET amplifiers.  Having a preamp [or active crossover] that can correct for the subwoofer-to-Jub bass bin time delay will also improve the sound quality.  I've found that preamps don't make as much difference with Jubs as the following...

I'd also recommend trying out a Yamaha SP2060 active or similar instead of mixing and matching amplifiers. He may find a significant increase in SQ detail just doing that.  YMMV.

Not sure that you would have to live too close to listen.

I would go with a pro audio amp for the subs, like a QSC or similar.  Then, absolutely use home audio amps for the jub bins and top horns, and be sure that each has gain controls.  All the amps in the system should have gain controls.

I think the processor is just or even more important than the amps.  Don't cheap out on the processor.

A Mac pre is a great idea.  It will input and drive home audio and pro audio components both in a mixed system with no issues.  personally I like Mac's tube preamps.
