mdeneen,

Just to add to a few things, growing up as white trash, I did have the police target me because of my parents. I did have jobs not given to me due to my family. I did have loans not given to me due to where I lived. So I went through the same things blacks and other minorities go through. I had to scratch and claw my way to where I am now.

I also had my parents taking clothes from other people instead of buying me clothing. Do you know what it's like to have to wear a girls shirt while in the 8th grade? Do you know what it's like to have to wear a pair of sneakers that have the whole side ripped on them becuase they refused to pay more than $5.00 for a pair of sneakers for a whole school year?

I had a full scholarship for high school and didn't get to go, you know why? Because my parents refused the $100.00 sign up fee due. I was a straight A student from Kindergarten up until I left high school. So I had to go to a public high school. I also moved out when I was 16 and had to work a full time job while going to school. I''ve been working since I'm 9 years old when I had a paper route that I delivered 120 papers daily. I made on average $120.00 a week from that and had to give my parents $100.00 weekly for rent. At 12 I worked in a laundry mat folding clothes and was paid 0.50c for every 2 loads of laundry I folded. I worked 4 days a week and weekends and paid my parents $100.00 weekly from that job. At 14, I worked in a restaurant and lied saying I was 16 in order to work the weekends and Fridays from 4-2. I made on average $200.00 a week then, I had to pay my parents $150.00 a week.

Why am I different from anyone else? I could have easily chosen to live off the government. I could have easily blamed my parents for my life but didn't. Why are blacks different?

Okay.......  Get the perspectives clear.  Between 1525 and 1866 some 12.5 million blacks were taken from Africa to the new world.  Of those just under 400,000 landed on the shores of what was to be known as America.  The newly founded America ended all importation of slaves in 1808.  Sadly black slave labor did become the economic labor engine of the agrarian southern states.  Though new slaves could not be imported the existing slaves and their families could still be held and sold as property.  Slavery did not end with their emancipation but with the passage/ratification of the 13th amendment in 1865.  Their stories are horrific.  Their stories are horrific all the way through to the mid 20 century.  In the early 20th century lynchings were not uncommon rarities.  Hard to believe, but less than 100 years ago blacks were hung for being black.

There is now escaping this ugly factual history.  Wanna know why many of todays black churches also serve as political forums?  It is because blacks were not allowed to gather and discuss politics.  It was illegal.  But they could gather in their own churches where they could discuss politics.  So the 2 purposes melded into one and they still work that way.

So......... what to do about what we have today?  THAT'S the tough question.  It is incredibly complex and emotional and palpable.  Nurturing a sense of entitlement is not the answer.  It does not result in self respect or self support.  It is a real mess.

Just to add top Oscarsear- Every powerhouse of a country throughout history had slaves, not to say it was or is right. But they did. Spain with Columbus just prior to us. Columbus killed 1,000's upon 1,000's of people for not becoming his faith. Are those people still complaining?

Why are blacks different?

They aren't.  Some fit the stereotype, some don't.  Just like the rest of us.

They run all sports and make millions upon millions of dollars to play a game.

They don't.  No black runs sports, all the ceo's such as the (cough) nonprofit nfl are run by a white guy.  A few blacks play for good money in all leagues but the percentage versus the population is small.  The percentage for any racial category playing sports for good money is small.

No because they are dead.

Wonder what the connection is from being able to read and get a HS diploma or GED, thus a job

Reading that is what. Without the ability to read, writing becomes impossible, thus the inability to fill out a resume for a job. A real shame would be having a HS diploma and not know how to read on a 2nd grade level. No, reading is what makes the other subjects possible.

Without reading skills, there is no diploma. Illiteracy is not just a black issue. No diploma, no job, not even for Mickey D's wages.

Slavery certainly has existed in many countries and in many cultures, and for more than just blacks.  America does hold one uniquely distinct history in regard to slaves.  We're the only country that disemboweled itself with a massive war to resolve the issue.  That civil war seeded tons of racial resentment that did not exist in England or Spain or anywhere else.  Blacks in America got a double dose of inhumanity.  1st with slavery and 2ndly with Jim Crow laws that'll really make anyone who studies them in detail puke.  In the early 60's little blacks girls were escorted to public white schools and they were taunted with the most vile death threats not from the other students but from their parents.  No.........  blacks in America got a pretty raw deal.  At the same time I believe the American Indian suffered worse in other ways.

When I say they run sports, I mean they are the ones getting paid by the ceos. They are the ones m,aking millions. We aren't.

Why should they?  They converted rather than die.  Your reasoning is pointless.

Yes, but are they being segregated today? Are they not allowed to go to the same schools and use the same education system? Are they not allowed to start their own companies? Are we still to be held responsible for what happened in the past? When are they going to be held responsible for their own actions? Or are we to continue to look at the plight of the poor race and continue to give to them?

Actually a bunch didn't. That's why they were slaughtered, and you just made my point. If they did conform, and they continued to live, and the newer generations were "spared" are they complaining or not about what happened to their ancestors? Are they sitting home collecting government subsidies? Again, what makes them different?

Jim.........  I am not suggesting any solutions.   If I had any suggestions I'd offer them up.  It is a mess.  What I am saying to you is that blacks in America have a unique history which is incomparable to other countries who also once held black slaves.  When those countries peacefully ended slavery blacks were allowed to integrate starting way back then.  Blacks in America were not only held back they got hammered.  That cannot be ignored or set aside.  It does impact what we have today.  It does not render any solutions, but it is a huge factor.
