Setup on Charter DVR

My charter DVR in the advanced audio settings asked if I would want HEAVY,LIGHT or NONE-for compression. Also asks if I want STEREO or MATRIX for stereo output choice. Can anyone tell me which I should have these two settings set to? I had not realized these settings were even in here till tonight. The charter guy had the compression set to LIGHT and the stereo output set to MATRIX. Tried to Google it but not much info out there. Thanks for any replies.

You definitely want it on stereo and I would go with no compression but that is a personal preference.

What are the advantages or disadvantages of compression, or should I just listen to it all three ways and see what sounds best to me? Had I been missing sound by using compressed audio?

typically when you compress audio or video it is to reduce the file size but by doing so you have to throw away information in order to get the file size smaller so to me anytime use compression there is a loss whether it be audio or video

In this context compression is not about file size but about dynamic range. Compression in audio attempts to reduce the difference between the quietest and loudest portions of the audio signal. This compression makes quiet things louder and loud things more quiet.

My instinct is to always keep any kind of post processing compression off. Most TV programming will already be compressed to a certain degree and don't require any additional work. Movie programming may or may not be additionally compressed for broadcasting but, given the work that goes into creating a movie sound track, I would prefer to leave that untouched as to preserve the original presentation as much as possible.

As far as Matrix vs Stereo goes; if you do not Matrix your sound you will not have access to any Dolby Surround encoding that may be available with those programs. This may not be a factor depending on what you watch or whether or not you have a surround sound system. Material that is native stereo will not be affected by having Matrix enabled, and any other programming will be processed into surround in accordance to it's program.

I should have thought about this longer before I replied the first time. IIRC the Matrix / Stereo will only affect analog sound and any digital connection will pass through whatever raw data is available. The Matrix in analog would be psuedo stereo.

As soon as I saw Sancho Panza's post . It jogged my memory .

I was just fiddling with those same settings, and going matrix with no compression does seem to broaden the sound stage. Speaking of Charter DVR, is it possible to  copy the movies to another drive/computer?
