Q-Sound recordings

Has anyone ever listened to a Q-Sound recording? If so what was your opinion of it? What was the album you heard, and how did it compare to a normal CD?

 

A friend of mine told me to get the Roger Waters- Amused to Death cd, and I picked it up. In our room the soundstage expands to at least 5' beyond each side wall and at least 15' behind the front wall, not to mention hearing things behind me, and this is with only 2 speakers!

You are absolutely correct. Roger Water's Amused to Death does exactly as you described, except maybe for the depth of the sound stage. On my system some sounds appear to be well beyond the outside of the house. And by that I mean 100+ feet away.

 

It's really uncanny to close your eyes & point to where you hear the sound coming from, open them, and see that you're pointing well to the left or right of the left or right speaker.

 

There are plenty of other ways to manipulate, or sound I say simulate, "surround sound".

 

On Pink Floyd's Final Cut, I could swear the walking sound was coming from someone in the hall behind me. I would always turn & look thinking it was my wife taking a load of clothes to the laundry room. There always was no one there.

 

Peter Gabriel's Up has similar qualities. On the track Growing Up the swirling synthesizer sound appears to come out of the left speaker, swirl around your head & then zoom into the right speaker. Other tracks also exhibit the same "beyond the left & right speaker" effects as Amused to Death.

 

I have a cheap Q-Sound processor. I've tried it on my own acoustical recordings of choir/ensemble/orchestra as well as on regular recordings played on my main system & haven't liked the results. So the big guys are obviously doing something more/different than what is capable with run of the mill inexpensive Q-Sound processing.

WOW, I thought we were doing good at 15' behind the wall which is 4 feet behind the screen and 16' from the MLP.

I got RTR Master of Voodoo Chile, and the panning of the guitar spins around the entire room including right beside my head as well as behind. It will scare you the first time you hear it. Not bad for an almost 50 yr old recording!

 By RTR I take it you mean reel to reel tape?

I am a DynaQuad guy and have been since 1976...but always looking for something as pure, unprocessed, and organic as the Hafler circuit.  Didn't get exhaustive by any stretch, but a search for Q Sound didn't turn up much.  At the listener end, is this a device or an algorithm?

Yes, Waters used Q-Sound processing on the CD. It's already "there". You don't have to do or add anything.

Dave, it's both. It's usually available in some form of hardware. I believe I've also seen it available as software, as a plug-in. I'm looking into it, maybe to use with J River Digital Media Center. I'm also trying to use Izotope Ozone (fantastic mastering software plug-in) with J River. I use Ozone with Sony Sound Forge Pro & Acid Pro. Richard Burwen's Audio Splendor is supposed to work with it as a plug-in as well. I just haven't gotten around it yet.

Yup, All I did was rip the Album  to my HDD as a FLAC (largest file possible), and then played it with Kodi... Nothing special needed at all. I am currently trying to find out if all of the ones listed on the Q-Sound site are only available in Q-Sound, as I don't want to buy it and find out there are different versions. The album I have says Q-Sound, but some of the others I have been looking at don't say anything about Q-Sound.

 

It is def worth the experience in my opinion. I think I paid $14 new for it off of eBay.

Considering the date of the recording I wonder if the Q-sound was actual positional works done during recording or something that was brought out of the recording similar to Q-sound's expansion or SRS?

I believe Pink Floyd's "The Final Cut" was also done with Q-sound or Binaural.  Appears to be Holophonics.  http://www.ingsoc.com/waters/info/sounds.html

Crikey.  I take it this is pre or post and pre requires nothing for playback.  Post...quite a mystery.  The QSound site implies there are post devices for the consumer but is totally mum on from whom or where.  Search for QSound HD turns up little or nothing.

 

Rather strange...

It uses a wall wart for power. I think this was only $29.95.  Here's a link to Qsound "3D soundstore" but it doesn't seem to lead to anything pertinent however it does list the ultraQ and the plug-in software.

I tried to find the plug-in software for products like ProTools & I found this:

I called Sweetwater.com but they don't seem to know anything about Qsound, software or hardware. Qsound is located in Calgary, Canada. I'll give them a call later today.

Losing faith in these people.  Ran that model, arrto, and there were no dealer hits except QSound.  Clicking on the link on their site that is supposed to take you to their online store takes you to a hijack site. 

 

I've emailed them...

 

What was your experience with analog sources with that device?  Looks worth 30.00 just as an experiment against my 15.00 DynaQuad.
