RF-7II vs. Heritage for HT

I'm stuck.  I'm building a new  HT system and I've heard rave reviews for the RF-7II's but never actually heard them.  I have heard all the Heritage line and I am specifically considering used Cornwalls for the front and Heresys for the rear.  I can get these all on Craigslist for roughly $1,200-$1,500.  OR, I can also get a pair of black ash RF-7II's that are only a couple months old and in mint condition (according to the seller) for $1,800.

I need some opinions from people who own the RF-7II's and also know how the Heritage stand up in a HT setting. What would you do?

Good news and bad news.  The bad new is that it is a hard choice and setting up a center channel is not as easy for the Heritage line.  The good new is that both will make a great HT.  The Heritage line is a little more bulky but, the wood finishes will be beautiful.  Both system will do the job.  Heritage line excels in vocals and midrange.  The RF 7 are hard to beat as mains for HT.  I have a Reference HT that I will stick with.  Not enough differece to do a major swithch.  I could easily have either and be completely happy. :)

They will sound different to your ears.  See if by some remote chance you can demo them for yourself and make a sound decision.  Me I am a Heritage guy to the end.  My vote is obviously for the Cornwall's & Heresy's but I am a vintage snob.

That said I did ponder the notion of trading my entire set up for an all RF-7, RC-7 & RS-7 arrangement then I came to my senses. :-)

We love our Heritage HT (see equipment below).  If you put in a large Acoustically Transparent screen, you can put a Belle Klipsch or a La Scala (II) in as a center speaker.  Seymour makes a good AT screen.  I recommend Audyssey MultiEQ XT or higher, and both absorbers (at first reflection points) and diffusers.

Our system is clear loud or soft, very musical with well recorded soundtracks (the majority nowadays), and can make the couch move frighteningly.

I was forced to go from RF7's to Klipschorns and to be quite honest, they are so close in performance I wouldn't be able to pick which one I prefered.

I'm using an RC7 for my center and think that it matches pretty well with the Klipschorns.

Absolutely go with the Heritage stuff.

Ask Youthman, he did not like the look of the Heritage and had the big three of the Reference line, but when he tried LaScalas, he could not turn back. He is now a Heritage believer!

Instead of the Cornwalls, I would suggest two Klipschorns up front with a split LaScals for a center channel in case you like to listen to a lot of two channel music. With the split LaScala center, you can put the top hat at the top of the screen with the Bass horn on bottom, or put the top hat below the screen with the Bass horn just off center,

If you don't listen to that much music and are all about movies or like music with a sub woofer or two, go with three LaScalas across the front with the center channel being a split LaScala.

If you doubt any of this, I suggest you set up a Demo with Youthman before you spend your money as he still has his RF-7IIs and could easily swap them out for a comparison, but if you have a discerning ear, I believe you will find no comparison as there is much clearer articulation with the Heritage in my experience which is a bit more than the average bear...

Heritage for sure - And the Heresy speaker in any quantity is sufficient -

From a measurement standpoint, I think the RF-7 setup would measure the best.  From an excitement level, the Heritage line just seems to be more engaging. Both would be great and I have tried to have both setups simultaneously so I could compare, but I just haven't been able to swing it.  I would have no problem with either.

Why would you say that you would even think the RF-7II would measure best??? In what way??? It sure does not sound the best, is not as efficient, so it inherently should have more distortion. They are more power hungry, wont play as loud. I would surely think they don't play as flat, and horn loaded Bass is more accurate if he goes with Klipschorns or LaScalas. I presently own all TSCMs and original RF-7s and it is hands down no comparison. I have owned both Klipschorns and LaScalas in the past as well as have a buddy within 12 miles that has a pair of Klipschorns and three LaScalas, a brother in Law within 5 miles that owns Klipschorns and a Nephew within 3 miles that owns LaScalas. I am truly curious where you are coming from with this and what you base your hypothesis on???

Distortion is not even a real factor.  The RF 7, 7II are prettey efficient and at most people listening level the distortion of either Heritage or Reference will not be audible.  Now if you like like the sound of one over the other, that is a personal choice.   How much clearer can voices and explosions get, lol.  Most people run a sub in their HT and that reduces cone movement of any speaker dramatically/distortion.  To many people use that distortion phrase when it comes to Heritage vs Reference and don't quantify it with supporting data at normal listening levels or in the drivers normal operating range.  Don't get me wrong, Heritage speakers can make an awesome HT but, my Reference set for HT is pretty awsome also. :P
