richieb
Among KHorn owners how many keep the top hat attached as normal with screws or leave un-attached for easier access to networks, drivers, wiring, etc.? Is there a downside in not securing the tops? Or securing the top and resting the networks on the top of the top hat? Speakers are in no danger of kids or unauthorized people jostling them. Budman
the top hats are secured with 2 wing nuts per speaker. i always have mine secured i believe your tophats were custom built so i don't know how yours are attached. factory used a threaded shaft sticking down about an inch from the bottom of the tophat to a L bracket on the bass bin secured with a wing nut. one on each side. same thing goes for the side grills. Ditto for mine. The top hats and side grills were "custom mounted," i.e., I can't switch them because screw holes and threaded shafts were not precisely located between the two sides. Because the top hats are heavy and awkward to move around, and I doubt these is any sonic issue with just resting them in place, I have always left the wing nuts off. The screw shafts and brackets guide them into position, and I just leave them there. The side grills always have to be firmly attached, of course. IIRC, access to drivers, networks, and wiring are not affected by leaving top hats in place, though it can get a little challenging. In fact, installing the wire goes better with them in place, as I have found in rewiring my K-horns some three or four times. bhenry
Mine just have recesses in the top of the lower cabinet and rubber nubs that sit in the recesses. No wing nuts or brackets.
