tigerwoodKhorns
Well, I have tried very hard to migrate to Linux Mint for my business but it is no tgoing to happen. Not because Linux is not a great (and friednly - it does not try to sell you stuff) OS, but becuase Microsoft is making it difficult to migrate and I cannot take the leap. Specifically, Outlook has a decade of my emails in a proprietory format and access to archived enmaisl will be difficult (I was going to set up an old XP computer and use remote desktop to solve this) Moreover, I was workign on my laptop and Libreoffice has difficulty with "trach changes" in docx. AFter research, it turns out that MS does not follow the protocall that they claim to follow. Anyway, I am stuck and have to get 2 computer that I buiklt almost 1 year ago up and running with MS 7 Pro. I found OEM versions at Newegg for $139 each and I have a 15% coupon. This is the way to go right? I see some others on the internet for like $65 as a download or craigslist $20, but I figure these is a scam or illegal versions. I need Windows 7 and office (outlook word and excel) for 2 somputers. Any advice?
Mallette
7 will be sunseted as soon as 10 is released which will be this year. As the Cybermen say " You WILL be upgraded." Word has it that upgrade from 8 may be free. Not sure about 7. As to Word and Excel, they are a monopoly about the only "deals" are the educational pricing if you can qualify. Marvel
If only you were a student... I can get it for $19 as a staff at the college where I work. Office 2010 for the same price. The prices for less may be what someone received with their computer, but legally, it is licensed to the machine and they can't sell it. The license sticker goes with the box. tigerwoodKhorns
The Win 7 is upgradable to MS 10. Will that actually be an upgrade?
Marvel
Yes, and it will be a free upgrade. Edited February 28, 2015 by Marvel

The education rather, that is, for students, is cheap but not that cheap. Dave
Marvel
Is that a work at home deal? Technically, that's what ours is supposed to be. Or just the volume your company gets?
Mallette
Is that a work at home deal? Technically, that's what ours is supposed to be. Or just the volume your company gets? The work at home deal. I think it's the same for all such large companies and institutions. If you'll get hooked on the drug, they give it to your family basically for free. Good business... tigerwoodKhorns
Which version of office should I go with? I was thinking 2010 because 2013 was made for Win 8. I feel a little sick having to throw in the towel on Linux. I love that OS on my laptops.
tigerwoodKhorns
Is that a work at home deal? Technically, that's what ours is supposed to be. Or just the volume your company gets? So I should at least buy 2 Win 7 licenses. They are $140 each with a 15% discount. Will the Win 10 upgrade be a "do it in 30 days scenario or can I wait. I assuem it is a use it or lose it, which means the risk of upgrading into another fiasco like Win 8.
Mallette
They are $140 each with a 15% discount. Yikes. Must you have professional? Home premium is less than 90 at Walmart. I've also heard that the price on 10 will be reduced a lot. Dave
Jeff Matthews
Chris, I highly recommend you take a look at Office 365, which might even still come with a nice-sized cloud drive ala MS which it calls One Drive. It's something like $72 a year, and you will always be current. That's a small price to pay for us lawyers who live and die by word processing and email. Also, you need only 1 subscription which you can use from any computer, anywhere. Win 8 is goofy in its own way, but I have become accustomed to it. Also, it supports touch screen. I haven't fully re-oriented my brain to using the touch screen, and usually I do when my computer is at an odd angle from me and I need to do something minor. I also use the touch screen when I get aggravated at my mouse control (fat fingers). I figured touch would be over-rated. but really, it is good. You point and touch where you want to check/uncheck or type. Pointing is so much faster than zeroing in with your mouse pointer. I wish I could make the full transition. I wonder what W10 will do that differs from 8... In any event, I would suggest 8 if you must do something now and can't wait for 10. 8 has been pretty good. Mallette
I wonder what W10 will do that differs from 8... Largely "hybridizes" 7 and 8. Dave

I read the differences and I need soemthing like 4 or 5 of the 10 or so differences. Jeff, I tried 8. NFW will I buy that garbage. I hate it. Edgar
I need Windows 7 and office (outlook word and excel) for 2 somputers. Any advice? Right now Windows 8 appears to be significantly cheaper than Windows 7. If you don't like the Windows 8 user interface, you can download Classic Shell for free, http://www.classicshell.net/, and it will emulate (and even improve) the Windows 7 start menu. I use Classic Shell because I have, simultaneously, computers running Windows 2000 (!), Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8, and I need to have a reasonably consistent user interface across all of them. Mallette
Edgar is right. 8.2 is quite tolerable run with the desktop. 7 will soon be abandoned to the hackers by your good friends at MS, so it is NOT an option to stay with unless you stay off the internet or are VERY good at detecting intrusions. WMcD
FWIW: I have set up a couple of laptops for friends of friends with Ubuntu and Open Office. Not to say that everyone is in their situation but they are down at the poverty level and have old laptops from the XT times. In these two cases the laptop was a hand me down or found in a dumpster with very messed up OS or worse. They certainly cannot afford legit MS software. Ubuntu and Open Office work well for them. OTOH: I tried Open Office to work with a docx. file. Yeah, it opened the file but line spacing changed enough to alter a very carefully formatted document in ways which made a problem. Therefore I just have to use MS Word. A good buddy swears by Open Office and it is difficult to explain that it can't be used in a business setting where everyone else is using MS Word and files are traded. But that is my experience. On a related matter, I held on to using WordPerfect until there were gripes from others and I was forced to convert to MS Word, kicking and screaming. Smile. Win 7 has support until 2020. WMcD That is exactly my experiance. Constrantly trading documents, usually very long docs. Track changes is critical and Openoffice does a great job, but it has some quirks in reading docx files with changes. So the monopoly wins again. I tried. WMcD
Just to tell a humorous story in the context of delaying things, like upgrades. Two poaches were caught in the royal forest and brought before the king. He sentenced them to death. Poacher A said: "Sire, don't kill us, we can teach your horse to talk." The king asked how long this will take. Poacher A said, "It will take a year if the horse is intelligent, maybe two if he is not." So the king sent them to the royal stables. Poacher B asked Poacher A, "Why did you say that? The horse will never talk." Poacher A explained. "In a year or two, you may die, I may die, the king may die, or the horse may die. Or maybe the horse will talk." So I'm in no rush to upgrade. WMcD
muel
Security updates for Windows 7 continues until 1/14/2020. I've had no problems running Office 2013 with Windows 7 at home or work.
