Foam surrounds suck

Humidity is the culprit.  The water gets to the molecules and breaks them down.  The reaction is called Hydrolysis and happens to polyester-based foams of which speaker surrounds are made from.

Today's foam (polyether-based) surrounds are better than the vintage stuff but they too will eventually need replacement.

Rubber surrounds aren't problem free either, they crack and stiffen with time.

As far as cloth surrounds go, they're infiltrated with polymeric sealants and can deteriorate too resulting in leakages at the surround.

So nowhere is there a Utopia.
