Rocko81
I wasn't sure where to put this so I dropped it in 2-channel I have a Marantz NR1402 that's running my Klipsch damn well. Now I want to hook up my turntable to the nr1402. I purchased the Emotiva XPS-1 phono amp and tried to hook it up to the rear of my marantz but it doesn't seem to recognize it as a source. What am I missing? There isn't any type of "aux" to plug into. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you, Rick

USNRET
That would be one of these inputs on your AVR. Make sure you have the input / source assignment set to use analog input not HDMI, etc. Edited March 12, 2015 by USNRET
Rocko81
That would be one of these inputs on your AVR. Make sure you have the input / source assignment set to use analog input not HDMI, etc. This is exactly what I'm missing! It'll be the first thing I do when I get home tonight. Rocko81
Success! We'll sort of. I can hear it but just barely with it turned up all the way. Hmmmm...?
USNRET
What cartridge are you using on the turn table? Is it LOMC, low output moving coil, or HOMC/MM high output moving coil or moving magnet. Ensure that phono stage is set properly.
Bryant0086
Now that you have the inputs selected on the Marantz, just hook up your preamp now. Connect the phono RCA jacks to the phono input on the Emotiva. Connect the "main outputs of the Emotiva to the inputs of the AVR you were using when you got sound out of it. Have MM selected and the switches on the back on "full range." see what you get there. Bryant

Thank you, Rick your preamp has a switch (actually two) on the back that say "full range" and "high pass." Those should be on full range. There is also another switch on the back of the Emotiva that says MM and MC. MM should be selected. A moving magnet turntable is more common than a moving coil. It is also generally a higher output, so it is safe to select MM even if you have a moving coil type cartridge. Bryant

Here is a link to the back of my receiver. http://us.marantz.com/us/Products/Pages/ZoomImage.aspx?img=/Assets/images/products/NR1402/XL_1402-rear.jpg My cart is a Shure M91ED and the Emotiva is set to MM. Just to be sure that I have everything hooked up correctly I took the entire setup over to my tubes and plugged it in exactly the way it's plugged into the Marantz. It sounds great on the tubes. It sounds great on the tubes. Thanks, Rick The only explanation is that you don't have the right connection selected for the source. What I mean is, if you look at the first HDMI input, it is labeled as BD. Your top analog audio in is also labeled as BD. You have to choose one or the other in your on screen setup, you will have to choose where your audio source is coming from on the BD input. If you are using HDMI, it would be HDMI, if it were two channel analog audio, then analog audio would be the selection. With HDMI being so popular these days, the default is probably going to be HDMI on the BD. If you need more help, I may can help if you tell me which input you have open. You often can't usually use the BD input (just for example) for two different sources. Let's say, for example that you had an Oppo BD player hooked up to the BD HDMI input. That means, you probably couldn't assign the analog BD input to another source. I don't know that for sure, as your receiver being a thinline is a bit limited in connectivity, but you can't do it with my receiver. Am I making sense ? Bryant Mine looks exactly like the picture that USNRET posted above. I have it in the CD. I wasn't able to even use cd till I went and turned it on in the menu settings once I did that it I had to turn the volume up all the way just to hear the record. I even tried turning up the analog output in the setting but it didn't add much volume.
Bryant0086
I see MY problem. I pulled up your preamp and got a different one. Seems as though Emotiva also makes a fancy preamp called a Emotiva XSP-1. I was looking at it instead of the Emotiva XPS-1. Since it is the same model number, other than two letters transposed, it never caught my attention until now. Forget eveything I posted. If you have an input on your AVR that you could hear the sound coming out of, but it simply wasn't loud enough, use that input. Run your turntable RCA jacks into the input of the Emotiva. Run the output of the Emotiva to the input you were getting the sound out of on your AVR. Make sure the Emotiva is powered up. It has a power light on it. See if you get anything with that setup. I know the Emotiva works the way it should because I hooked it up to my tubes. I just can't get it to work with the Marantz AVR. What I didn't try is something else in the same input jack. I'll try that tonight and report back. Thanks again, Rick

I just hooked the TT to the Emotiva phono stage and then hooked the phono stage into my pre. Essentially the same exact thing I'm doing with the Marantz ( I didn't even unplug the TT and the phono stage, just the phono stage from the rear of the Marantz AVR) That's what makes me think I'm missing something about the AVR. Schu
No sound or very limited sound? You may need a SUT for a low output cartridge.
USNRET
No sound or very limited sound? You may need a SUT for a low output cartridge. Schu, he has very limited and is using an Emotiva phon stage with both LO and HO modes. TT and stgae works on every thing but his main AVR. Gotta be A) set-up or bad AVR input. I can't recall if he has tried a different source (CD perhaps) into the AVR analog input that he is using for the TT.
