I wonder if this is what's happening here. If the fuel and oxygen burn up, and no more can get in, the combustion stops. The only thing is, this is not standing waves. I've seen videos of girls in cars with giant subs, and their hair blows back and forth violently. Perhaps this push-pull of air disturbs the oxidization or even blows it out.
