An Old Love Rediscovered

Finally did it. I’ve been reading about Klipsch since my teens in the late 70’s. I got to hear a pair of La Scalla’s while I was in the Air Force in the 80’s, but they were just a dream on E3 pay. I was able to put together a system that really streched our budget. But back in the early 90’s the kids thought the cassette desk was hungry and fed it a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and one of the speakers got a glass of milk to wash it down. Lost a few CD players and VCRs to various PB&J, pancakes and poptarts, as well. I’ve forgotten what horrors befell the rest of the system. So I put having any type of music system on hold until the kids were grown.

 

But I’ve just finished setting up a new receiver and pair of Klipsch RB-61 II’s. I’m mostly streaming Pandora and cable music channels right now, but the 61’s sound pretty very impressive in our small house. In fact, the first thing I listened to was a smooth Jazz stream; I was blown away by the detail and clarity. Then on to some Pat Metheny FLAC files. Wow! My wife thought it was funny because I just kept smiling like a kid in a candy store.

 

Now I’ve got my eye on a subwoofer, maybe an R-10SW or R-12SW, and a Bluray/SACD player. I may never be able to afford those La Scalla’s, but I am rediscovering a love of music I thought I’d lost.

The late 70's, you are patient, but doing fine now, you never lost the love of music you just took a break.

The funny part is, the wife and I went to BestBuy to listen to some Pioneer I'd read positive review on. I’ll grant you BB isn’t the ideal listening environment, but she wasn’t impressed with the Pioneers. I started switching between the different speakers and when I got to the Klipsch RB-51’s she said: I like those a lot better; I think you should get the Klipsch. They were more expensive I explained. She replied: So, they sound better; I think you should go with the Klipsch. Who was I to argue? I couldn’t get her to go for the RP-260F’s though. Of course I had to bump up to the RB-61’s so I could take some credit for taking part in the decision. And everything (speakers, receiver and cables) fit within a few dollars of our budget.

Sometimes buying used is the "best buy." For example, there are a set of RB-75's on Audiogon for $475 right now. List is $1,200.

Welcome to the forum.  Be patient and keep your eye out on CL and elsewhere for a pair of used La Scala's.  With a little time and elbow grease, you can fashion yourself a pair to last you a lifetime.  Check out some of the restoration threads on the forum to see what can be done with the Heritage speakers.

The only thing I'll add is….try a PB&J sandwich grilled like a grilled cheese…it's awesome
