Had a blast and boiled 3 sacks of crawfish that were really good and large sized. Happy Easter to all. Mallette
Fluffy rabbits + chickens and chocolate eggs + new dresses for little girls + rising from the dead? I gotta admit, I don't get this one! But, it's beautiful out today (88F) so it will be a nice day. You have it all wrong. Most of what you speak of are 20th century inventions. The feast itself is deeply rooted in Germanic cultures which were, of course, hardly confined to Germany. Britain in the 8th century was more German than anything else. The Anglican monk known as the venerable Bede wrote in "De Temporum Ratione" or "The Reckoning of Time" which was something of a concordance on the way various cultures of the time determined the months and seasons: "Eostur-monath, qui nunc Paschalis mensis interpretatur, quondam a Dea illorum quæ Eostre vocabatur, et cui in illo festa celebrabant nomen habuit: a cujus nomine nunc Paschale tempus cognominant, consueto antiquæ observationis vocabulo gaudia novæ solemnitatis vocantes." Translates roughly as: "Eosturmonath has a name which is now translated "Paschal month", and which was once called after a goddess of theirs named Eostre, in whose honour feasts were celebrated in that month. Now they designate that Paschal season by her name, calling the joys of the new rite by the time-honoured name of the old observance." So, even then, a rather mixed up holiday with something for everyone. Just enjoy. My parish was literally packed this morning and the music and happiness spread through everyone. Just take Carl's advice: Don't overthink it. Just seize the day and enjoy it! Dave
