JoeDirt
Took my boat out last week and after listening to music all winter in my house, my boat stereo sounds like crap! So I'm considering upgrading the speakers and possibly the amplifier or head unit. Anyone have a slick high end solution that doesn't break the bank? Cabela's, West Marine, Crutchfield all have offerings that I like, but I want high sensitivity, high power, clean music rocking my hull. And fyi I don't care for the tower speakers as I am not 25 any more. Got any ideas???
ssh
I don't know if Klipsch outdoor speakers will work well in a boat application; mine get a lot of rain and work OK. SSH
Gnote
JL Audio - pricey but good
wstrickland1
Not breaking the bank and sick do not go hand in hand in the marine world. I have put together quite a few and have found that for amps and speakers JL Audio is the best with Wet Sounds right there with them. Fusion for the head unit. My last system consisted of a Fusion IP 700 HU, Wetsounds SD 6 amp, (4) JL M770 speakers and a JL M10 IB sub. It was truly incredible. You could step down in the fusion line and still be good. You could also step down to a wetsounds HT 6 amp and still be very good but don't skrimp on the speakers. JL makes a MX series speaker but they just don't quite cut it. Some people really like the Wetsounds XS line of speakers but I just can't get past the looks. They do rock out though. JL also makes a great amp in the MHD 900/5. I hasd one and it too was stellar but imho nowhere near as bad-azz as the SD 6.
mustang guy
+1 JL Audio. My neighbors are JL dealers and they put those systems in all the time. You won't be sorry you spent the extra money.
Max2
Its all about how much you want to spend. It does take a good bit of power to get big sound in a boat due to it being so open. You could fab some drivers with smaller mid horns on parts express. tie them in with some subs and cheap piezo tweeters and have a high output, good sounding budget system. Or you can drop a much bigger wad on some MB Quart or Focal coax's or separates, but you will still need subs. Check out older Phoenix Gold amps. They are cheap, clean sounding, great specs and 2ohm stable so you can bridge with multiple speakers.
wstrickland1
If you can get away with automotive stuff you will save money but I boat in saltwater inshore and offshore and that stuff wouldn't last a season. Freshwater with light exposure it might hold up ok. Edited April 7, 2015 by wstrickland1
