NBPK402
Tonight I was listening to my 5.1 Rush Moving Pictures disc, and was simply amazed as to how good it sounded (I hadn't listened to it on my new setup at all. This got me to looking for software to rip my DVDAudio discs, and SACD discs to the hdd. I found a DVDAudio Extractor that extracts it to various formats (I picked FLAC)... I tested it out and it works perfectly. Now I have to rip the few discs I have that are DVDAudio, and then find a ripper for my SACD discs. Does anyone have any recommendations for DVDAudio, SACD, or DTS discs for listening to? I Have the following... DVD Audio: Fleetwood Mac-Rumours Eagles- Hotel California Deep Purple Machine Head SACD/Hybrid Elton John - Yellow Brick Road Pink Floyd - Dark side of the moon 5.1 DTS Pink Floyd - Endless River DTS surround Steely Dan - Gaucho Boys II Men Santana - Abraxa Alan Parsons - On Air Edited April 8, 2015 by ellisr63
tromprof
How do you rip an SACD? I didn't think there was an SACD computer drive.
Chris A
A few... The Eagles - Hell Freezes Over (DTS) Diana Krall - Love Scenes (DTS) James Horner - Titanic (Soundtrack - DTS) Elton John (eponymous album) SACD 5.1 Elton John - Tumbleweed Connection SACD 5.1 Elton John - Madman Across the Water SACD 5.1 Elton John - Honky Chateau SACD 5.1 The Yellowjackets - Time Squared SACD 5.1 The Yellowjackets - Altered State SACD 5.1 The Yellowjackets - Lifecycle SACD 5.1 Norah Jones - Not Too Late (SACD 2.0)...the 2012 Analogue Productions version (I also will acquire her first two album 2012 SACDs from this same company) Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band - Swingin' for the Fences (DVD-A) Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band - XXL (DVD-A) And many more classical discs--but you didn't list any of those, so I didn't post any of those. Of this lot, all the Gordon Goodwin Big Phat Band DVD-As and DVD-Vs are by far the highest fidelity and the most impressive listening. Chris A
How do you rip an SACD? I didn't think there was an SACD computer drive. You need an early-model PS3 that hasn't been updated past firmware version 3.55--and some third-party freeware, available via web, to do it.
NBPK402
I am running into a problem with 3 of my DVD-A discs... When i go to copy them it says there is no disc in the drive. I have checked the discs and they have no scratches or smudges... I wonder if my BRD is failing. I have removed the discs and reinserted with the same results, but if i insert one of the discs that successfully ripped previously it sees them. The only difference i see is the 3 discs don't have as much data on them as the others... The others have info all the way to the outer edge and these are anywhere from 1/3 to 1/2 blank to the outer edge of the disc.

I ask because i know the old Sony DVD changers could play SACDs.

captmobley
Jacinta-My Name is Jacinta. Incredible female vocals Diana Krall-The Girl in the Other Room. Also female jazz vocals Dire Straits-Brothers in Arms. Breathtaking recording-used to demo audiophile systems at shows. All on SACD
NBPK402
Duh... The ones I was having trouble ripping were not DVD-A , but in fact DTS Surround CDs. I am currently trying different software versions for ripping to get the 5.1 instead of stereo out of the rips. I just ordered the Dire Straits- Brothers in Arms SACD.
willland
I just ordered the Dire Straits- Brothers in Arms SACD. Awesome. You will love it. IMO, a template on how to record music. Doesn't hurt that they are master musicians. Bill

Last night we listened to Fleetwood Mac- Rumours, and it sounded like they recorded it with too much reverb. I am going to have to rip it again to see if something was wrong with the rip. totalcomfort
If you liked the moving pictures you have to get the "2112" bluray just as good if not better. The album reminds me of the stairway to heaven song. Starts slow and takes you on a trip of music until ending in a fury and then slowly bringing you back down. Great graphics and sound track!!
totalcomfort
One of my demos is Rush time machine, the intro song has a killer bass note section from a key board. So far my best dvd's are from Rush or the Eagles, some of the best recordings I have heard.
Chris A
Last night we listened to Fleetwood Mac- Rumours, and it sounded like they recorded it with too much reverb. I've found that the Diana Krall Love Scenes (DTS) and SInatra at the Sands (DVD-A) discs have essentially the same symptom. I had to really tune up the individual channel EQ for each loudspeaker, for each driver channel, and really scrub the overall 5.1 channel gains to get these two discs sounding good and not too reverberant. I now use these two discs as test discs whenever I make a change in the system to check for any irregularities that I may have introduced. etc6849
You can use an extraction tool to get the dts files out, then use foobar2000 to convert them to flac. I think I used DVD decrypter in the past to extract the dts audio, but can't remember now. Duh... The ones I was having trouble ripping were not DVD-A , but in fact DTS Surround CDs. Chris A
I did it using Room EQ Wizard (REW) and a Behringer ECM8000 microphone using the active crossovers (a Yamaha SP2060 for the fronts, EV Dx38 for the center, another Dx38 for the surrounds, and the DSP EQ in the XTi-1000s driving the subs. Once I got all channels EQed within +/- 1.5 dB from 200 Hz-20 Khz, real magic occurred - not only for timbre matching all channels, but also for pure listening pleasure. The channel gains were set in the preamp (an Onkyo PR-SC886) and the 5.1 channel delays (only) were set via Audyssey and the Audyssey microphone at my listening position. If your loudspeakers already have relatively flat response and you have a relative dead listening room (i.e., your RT60 is lower than 0.3 between 70-7000 Hz), Audyssey may work out of the box without having to manually override and set the channel and driver gains/EQ by hand. My Audyssey version (the one that came with the preamp) has never worked very well in my medium-damped room, i.e., RT60 at the listening position of about 0.45 from 70-7000 Hz. In fact, the results from Audyssey have always been uniformly terrible, so I turn the Audyssey-derived EQ/dynamic EQ and channel gains off. The only thing that I use Audyssey to do is to help me set channel delays--and I have to correct the subwoofer delay due to the TH precursor pulse that Audyssey likes to key on, and is ~20 ms too early. Audyssey also has great trouble "hearing" my horn-loaded subs during calibration-since I cross over at 40 Hz. YMMV. Schu
The Phillip Glass Koyaanisqatsi DVD-A is perhaps the best digital recording I have ever heard. Edited April 8, 2015 by Schu
etc6849
I never liked Audyssey MultiEQ XT. Audyssey XT32 is much better, but I still wasn't satisfied with it. The good thing is newer AVR's have an "Audyssey Flat" setting to bypass the HF roll off. I don't know if it bypasses the midrange compensation, but this is something the Pro kit allows you to disable. The Audyssey Pro kit + license works great for me, but adds a lot to the cost. There's also SubEQ HT on newer AVRs that independently adjust both subs, then calibrates them together. This works great for me too.
