The Dude
I have an external hard drive with some movies in mkv format that I would like to play back to a tv or surround sound receiver. I was wondering if anyone has tried any of these, or knows of any other low cost alternative. http://www.amazon.com/Androset-ANDROSET_1080P-TVBOX-1080p-Multi-Player/dp/B006LEYQK4 http://www.amazon.com/Full-1080p-Media-Player-H-264/dp/B009B5FLKY
Thaddeus Smith
at the time (3 years ago), Oppo BDP-93 was the only quality device I could find that would play them back without transcoding. the landscape has likely changed since then, but you could probably find a used one for decent prices. or maybe a raspberry pi running plex OS? Cantilope
I see you have a PS3, I play MKVs on that all the time, however over DLNA, but I would think that it may work right off the drive. If not you can use Serviio as a DLNA server and do it over the network to the PS3. Serviio is a free DLNA server that I use to stream Vids and Music to my PS3, Raspberri Pi, and Smart TV. Let me know if you need a hand or a link...

I was going to take my Xbox out there until I found out it doesn't play mkv's. So I am looking for a cheaper alternative.
