justinsweber
Dave's Yields are truely jaw droping speakers... Ive owned 2 pair. But the DIYer in me wanted different. With Dave's aid we have the Might mite AKA Mini-Yield. 15" woofer for 200hz and below, AN 8" for everything above. The bass is much like the yield, tight, fast and controled... no boominess. I already loved the AN 8" so I'm an easy sell. Anyone inthe LA area is welcome for a listen. Dave cut the baffles for me, ampsandsound/ did the veener and diytube helped trnasfer Dave's schematic to PCB. Might make an awsome kit? My wife loves the sound and size... High WAF.
Daddy Dee
Justin, very cool. high WAF is easily imaginable. I'm wondering about the 8 inch. It is mounted to the baffle from the front, but the magnet is open through the back baffle, right? Is there some air movement there? Would love to hear these. They do look like they'd be a candidate to produce in kit form.
justinsweber
There is very little if any movement. There is 3/4" wool that surounds the sides of the 8" I can say it beats the conscala. The Yields do for bass reproduction, but if I owned an apt or needed smaller speakers these would be my 1st choice. The Bass is tight and fast and with the crossover they dont have the boxy sound open baffle guys hate.
wvu80
I'm confused! (big surprise, right?) Let me tell you what I think you have, then you correct me. DIY project (not kit), open baffle. This is a mid-bass module, with a 15" woofer and an 8" mid-driver. We don't know XO points. It looks like it is passively bi-amped, but it would interesting to know what all the wiring is on the XO. I presume no sub is necessary. Is this part of a 3-way system, or two-way? If this is full-range, I don't know what handles the HF section, surely not the 8" driver unless it's full range or co-axial. I also don't know the theory in mounting the 15" driver in the rear with only an 8" or so hole in the baffle. I'm also curious about which drivers you used. Is this a high-end build, or budget friendly? It looks really cool, the XO looks B/A and I can see how it would get a high WAF. Good stuff. Marvel
If this is full-range, I don't know what handles the HF section, surely not the 8" driver unless it's full range ... A tad over $200 a pair if it is the Supr 8 cast frame. http://www.commonsenseaudio.com/buy.html
justinsweber
yup... thats the one. though you could go stamped frame and prob not hear the difference.
justinsweber
Its a DIY unless dave starts selling the baffles as kits. The Woofer is a Eminence 15A which works very very very well for open baffle projects. Most use some varation of this driver. The hole it fires through is a port... Dave can explation more of the rational behind it. That said, the bass is tighter/ more horn liek than diect radators. The Crossover point is 200hz. Its a 2way with a 15" for LF and a 8" full range doing the heavy lifting. Its setup for a single amp. If you used mini DSP you wouldnt need the corssover. Its a small speaker. ~22wide, ~30 tall and 8" deep or so. I havnt measured in a bit.
Marvel
Justin, how large a room would these work in? Pretty nice looking, too. Bruce
justinsweber
The room there in is 12x12. But I'd consider anything smaller than 20x20. It's good good balance. I find the yields a true reference but they are much larger. These are like an apitiser to a true reference. If you've heard full range speakers but wanted real bass. This is a hot ticket. I would consider these voiced on the analytic side with the bass, which is a product of the crossover as much as anything else. A 1st order would be simpler and fuller sounding but would scarfice imaging.
justinsweber
Do you still have your yields? There are a smaller scale version but same sound Bruce.
Marvel
Wish I had some, but I've never heard them. I'm thinking the smaller ones you built could replace the JBLs in my living room. you could go stamped frame and prob not hear the difference. I didn't see any of the Audio Nirvana speakers with a stamped frame. Bruce Edited April 27, 2015 by Marvel
justinsweber
Looks like some changes to his offerings. I used the cast frame. You might call him and seen what he offers. I have dreams of trying the 15" in a sealed cab the size of a cornwall.
