Cornwall III

Hello Everyone,

I'm new to this forum I found while looking at the Cornwall III. Let me begin by saying that I grew up as a Hifi Audio Enthusiast. Thanks to my father and his undying love of finding that perfect sound thats a Lifelong JOURNEY. He was into hifi audio and I still have all his vinyl and Marantz 4400 amp. Music is the bible to my soul. The lyrics are the scriptures of my heart. Music was a way for my father and I to bond. When he lost the battle with cancer. I played his final songs that I'll never forget as he took his last breathe. Months later I had a dream with him in it. He said for me to finish what we started together. He wanted to build a pair of cornwalls. He built a lot of custom speaker systems for people around the world. He adored the cornwall speakers and loved the sound. Well I don't have the talent my father did. But I'm on a quest to finish what we started.

Right now, I have a Rotel RSP-1068 and a Kenwood with Def. Technology. I'm going to purchase the Cornwall III soon in about a month or so. After selling some stuff and the tax return comes in. Eventually, I want to hook up the Marantz Amp to the cornwalls. and go with a tube amp. Along with hooking up the record player.  Any suggestions for a tube amp, I dont understand the different classes they have. Plus I've seen some youtube videos where it looks like they've got a tube amp per speaker.

Welcome you have asked some good questions. Some of them need a lot of research for you to decide. But getting a pair of cornwalls should be rather easy. You find a pair of beat up ones if your handy at woodwork and also rebuild the crossovers if your handy at basic electronics. Some studying of a lot of the forum posts will catch you up on all of this. Search craigslist and e-bay and here in for sale section. Look for ones close cause shipping is going to be the killer on these. Rick

Hello and welcome to the forums!

Cornwalls III's are wonderful speakers. So are the the II's and the I's. Which brings me to my first question: Was it your father's dream to have Cornwall III's or any Cornwall?  The reason I ask is because there is a significant price difference between the earlier versions and the latest model even though some would say the sound reproduction isn't that significant. Cornwall III's are $4,000. Used Cornwall's (either the I or the II) can be had for about $800-$1200.  A huge savings!  It's an option that perhaps you didn't consider and it would save you a lot of money.

The two amp option you speak about is called bi-amping. It is not necessary for the Cornwalls.  I think your Marantz would sound wonderful paired with the Cornwalls!

You can pick up a tube amp to try out for your liking on Amazon for just a few hundred dollars.  They can cost several thousands. I suggest a Yaquin (example: http://www.amazon.com/YAQIN-MC-84L-Vacuum-Integrated-Amplifier/dp/B00A7IZV22/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1430309248&sr=8-7&keywords=yaquin) to start out with. I'm sure others will chime in with other options.

Enjoy the experience and happy to help you with your Dad's quest.

If you're doing tube amplifiers in a smallish listening room, I always recommend try-to-buy, since you may or may not like the different output impedance effects of the different tube amplifier topologies.  The problem with buying from a huge retailer is that there may be restrictions on returns due to the nature of tubes themselves.

You could PM NOSvalves for his recommendations, too, since he runs a business making and refurbishing those beasts.

Welcome to the forum, and congratulations on your choice of the Cornwall III's. You will not be disappointed in that selection.

As to your question about tube amps, we probably going to need some clarification. from you as to how you are using the term "amp"

You indicated in your post that you still had the Marantz 4400 "Amp." The 4400, as far as I recall, is a receiver, a Quad one at that.. A receiver has an amplifier, a pre-amplifier and a tuner all in one box.

The terminology associated with electronic components is a bit confusing at first, which is not your fault, sales people call different things by different names, and advertising sometimes does the same thing.

Get your speakers and listen to them for a few weeks and then decide if something is missing and see how loud you like to listen.  Most tube amps are low power compared to solid state amps.  This may affect listening levels.  Welcome to the forum and ask a lot of questions.

Welcome. CWIII's are fine speakers. We've had them in our 2 ch system for a few years now and are quite pleased with them. You mentioned Marantz ..... it generally pairs very well with Klipsch. Post often and let us know how you're progressing.
