For those with a library of old VHS tapes--

I've been trying to find a VHS player for my Uncle that has DVD's , but also a large library of VHS tapes.

Very difficult almost impossible to find a new one, and the old ones are subject to aging of plastic/ rubber etc.

All of a sudden, I see Sanyo it seems JUST started offering two models - a dvd/vhs (player only ), AND a vhs/ dvd recorder.

http://sanyo-av.com/product/index.php?category=player

So on the second one, you can play an old vhs and record it to a DVD-R disc. ("transfer" tape to disk)

They seem to be ONLY available at Walmart for $79.88   and $168.

Interesting to note, on the Sanyo website, the recording one vs the player has a weight difference of about +2.5 lbs, on their specs, even though they look almost identical.

I think they figured there was still enough of a niche demand.

Now if I can just find a new rewinder.

Dang, they used to be dime a dozen, well like $15.

Now a couple NIB on Amazon are like $70.

Just figured some of you folks may be interested.   Lars

My Dad was an extreme collector & repairer of VHS tape machines. I have several very high quality machines & tapes I will sell for cheap, just shoot me a pm.

Yes they can be converted to digital, my dad was using a machine called a Terrapin, I have it for sell as well. There are several businesses that will do that transfer service for you at a price .

Turns out you can't transfer commercially made vhs to dvd with the above machine, or any other,  due to Macrovision protection.

So, only home recorded tapes will transfer.

It seems there are some external gadgets and/ or techniques that may work around the Macrovision,  but sounds iffy.

Now I'm just waiting for someone to tell me if I can use the Sanyo dvd recorder to record content from Dishnetwork, without having the dvr from them.       Lars

Sorry to be so slow to get back with you on this timely subject.

First let me say you Moderators feel free as always to move this thread to Lounge or Classified as you  see fit. :) Dont mean to highjack it -

My dad was deeply into this gear & had several different "Anti-Microvision Devices" thru the years, I believe he said the Terrapin was the best. Here are some photos- of just some of the VCR's & such. Many still new in the box- High Speed Mitsubishi. Any one interested just shoot me a PM.

I may be interested in your VHS players if you still have any left in a few months.
