402+

Not a 402 - rather a (one) KPT-941-HF.

Not a KPT-305 - rather a (one) KPT-XII-MB.

Older style K-510 without "mumps".

mine - no jk, I just bought 3x KPT904

The top horn is not a 510 but the HF, it's smaller and used with the K69a as the tweeter in the 4 way cinema array. Or at least, that's what SHOULD be there. Does it look like a very small driver on that K402 horn? I wonder if they have the drivers on the wrong horns in that system?

Not K402, Mike.  The middle horn has a really big diffraction slot in it.  Look closely.

If you are calling the KPT-XII-MB horn a K402, that's your prerogative, but I wouldn't call it that.

I was going to say, that the K402 horn doesn't look right.  It looks more like a JLB 2360 with that slot in throat.

I am sure that would still be a heck of a set up.

  • 2 weeks later...

What is the horn at the top? And what freuency does it cover?

Always been curious about building one of these monsters but possibly using a Raal at the top. That being said I have never heard the 402 so I will wait to hear everything before I go adding ribbons. :D

Yes it is a ribbon. All honesty, I would think it would not have the horsepower to keep up. I can think of some other ribbons that would but those will never be an option. I would go with the Beyma TPL-200 if I really wanted a ribbon/AMT. But I know the Raal has just a touch more sparkle above 10Khz and above. BUT I will have to listen to the 402 before I say I need anything else.

My experience so far is that on the highs on normal spl levels in a room I have never heard a CD that sounds as good as the AMT's or ribbon tweeters. BUT there are not many ribbons that are used for pro audio unless they are large and that would become a problem with directivity matching. The Raal supposedly can take 200w which in theory would be plenty loud for a tweeter. BUT the Beyma TPL can take a lot more abuse from my experience. But again I am only curious. I know that some of the Khorn upgrades have a Beyma supertweeter so I was only curious on that area of improvement. I know JBL does this on some of their larger 3/4way designs also but I have not heard them.

So again just ideas. For the most part I am going to build a straight dual 15 horn possibly(JWC please :D) or straight dual 12 design. JWC's  Then add a EV horn for the top. Will have to wait some time to save for the 402. I will more than likely be very happy with the final combo. I just know that when I changed the mains in my living room I was amazed the difference in sound when I went from ribbon/amt's back to CD. And while that was shocking the one thing I REALLY miss are the dynamics you get fom these straight horn designs. Its been a long journey with very little money. So I am tryng to learn as much as I can and hopefully get what I want in a system in the end.

Just looked at some PM's I have that were from 2010. I remember writing those PM's and it felt like a year ago. So this year I am finally going to make some saw dust. And hopefully my dual 21 FLH will be able o keep up with the mains. :)
