WTB pair of k401 horns

No.4

Recommended Posts

I am looking for a pair of k401s for a la scala project. As of now I am planning on using ct-125, pd-5vh, a/4500 and kappa 15c for the build which are all readily available. However the k401s are eluding me. I am hoping one of you has a pair in your collection that you can part with. Thanks for looking, and thanks for all the great heritage threads.

The plastic version seem to be everyone's favorite non "aftermarket" option. So I would prefer to start out with them. I originally thought I could just get them from klipsch when I first started to hatch this project. But when I called they no longer stock these. Bummer. I also passed on the pair that was on ebay a few months ago. Oops.

Call back, you reached an idiot in customer service. They use these for current models, they have to have them in warehouse somewhere.

I wondered about that. They guy I spoke with was very nice but didn't seem to know much about the la scala or k horn(though I'm no expert either!) he said I had the right part number but he could not find anything. I even had him go through various model years to hopefully find it that way, but to no avail. When I asked about the LSII midhorn he told me they only sell the top half as a complete assembly (cabinet, tweeter, mid horn and driver, network....the whole thing.....which I found odd, but I didn't want to bug the guy any further.

Is there a part number other than k401 I should be seeking, or someone specific to speak with perhaps. Thanks

ooooooooooops - mike's right - these are still used in Scalas 2 - Khorns and will still be for years - the k400 are however beautiful show pieces -versus the plastic -

Called again this morning and no dice. I was told if they had them they don't sell items for diy. Which I understand. I said but I own kg4s? But no not quite. I guess I could have come up with a good story, but I'm not really looking to con customer service at klipsch.

So back to square one. K401s anyone?

If you are refurbishing a pair of genuine LaScalas, they should only need the serial number.  If  your stickers are shot, the serial numbers should be embossed on the EDGE of the plywood in the back.  (hard to describe, maybe someone could show a picture)

Turn them around, look at the TOP edge of the opening where the horns go and you should see it there (if memory serves me)

Got a flexible budget?

Do a search on 'JubeScala' and/or the K510.

After hearing them side by side, there's no way I'd put a K401 inside the LaScala if I had the budget to instead, drop in a 510.

It's a 2" horn so  you'd have to go active or get someone to make a passive.  You'd lose the tweeter too.

For those who have heard it, I'd dare say that most of them (if not all) would agree it's a significant step up from the standard LaScala setup.

Not really

Do a search on 'JubeScala' and/or the K510.

I have read a little about the 2" CDs and large format horns and while that is probably sonically the best and my wife would probably not mind the way they look, those components would totally drain the diy piggy bank. My goal is to build a pair of la scalas with as many "first step" upgrades or "hacks" as possible. So, heavily reinforced bass bin and the kappa 15c vs k33, ct 125 vs k77 and so on, I would also like to stay passive for now with mostly off the shelf components. Now I am going to make these splits like the LSII so down the road I can continue on the upgrade path. These will be powered by a diy 5 watt SET that is currently driving my kg4s, which sounds good, but I think I can get more out of the first couple watts with higher efficiency.

Last I knew Klipsch parts will not sell them to you without S/N's of existing speakers.  That said it has been awhile since I have purchased anything from them.

Yeah that's what I ran into.

Absolutely! My LS sounded great with my 3.5 watt amps.

Good luck!

Excellent, that is what I am hoping. Well, I have a pair of kappa 15c on the way, so back to the top hoping someone with a pair of k401s missed this. If not that's ok too. I may end up building a pair of mid horns for this project.
