onthethreshold Posted May 26, 2015 Share Posted May 26, 2015 I have the Crites tweeters and 4500 crossover in my 80's La Scala .Is there anyway to tone down the highs through rewiring the crossover ,resistors etc .It is too intense .Thank you in advance . I noticed with my system that if I cover my TV with a sheet when listening to music it cuts down the highs by quite a bit. So much in fact that I now only cover 1/2 of the TV because it sounded too 'dead' with the whole thing covered. Anyway, its something to try and doesn't cost any money. onthethreshold Posted May 27, 2015 Author Share Posted May 27, 2015 By highs I mean the tweeter is too hot .I have tailored the mid's by various trial and error using dampening materials .Let me state,I do mean the tweeters.I remember reading somewhere about wiring in resistors to the tweeter to tame it .Guy's I am a professional musician and done hi-fi for years .Not stating creds but I do know what I hear . moray james Posted May 27, 2015 Share Posted May 27, 2015 (edited) why don't you try a 40 ohm resistor across the tweeter first and see what you think ten watts will be fine that is a common way to smooth out a tweeter (Klipsch do this in many designs) the quality of the resistors has an impact but try what you have 40 - 50 ohms is an ok range, the term that they use for this is a swamping resistor.. It is usually the mids that are too prominent in La Scala and other Heritage using these drivers/horns, but it can fool you ... the mids often sound like highs. The La Scala tweeters cut in above the highest fundamental pitch of music as it is usually written, but they provide the rich shimmer and "air" of the overtones. Bob's tweeters are already a little gentler than the stock K-77s. It might be a serious mistake to cut the tweeters back. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Yeah, thats what I was going to recommend. NOT. I dont have a clue what that means, I'm just killing time here. But you may want to change out the muffler bearings. If you listen to just the K-77 or T-35 tweeter (with proper crossover so you don't burn it out) it is not really contributing anything except the highest octave. Rather tinny at best even though it adds sparkle overall. Nothing that could be annoying. OTOH, the mid is a powerhouse in our range of hearing.
