Reference ONE conductors

I've owned my Reference ONE headphones for a while now, and have generally been happy with them save for one problem: The length of the cable running off the phones.

Now usually that wouldn't be an issue, you could simply couple another auxiliary cable with a barrel and extend the wire out another 6 feet without an issue. However, with these phones just do not want to cooperate with ANY barrel nor ANY extension cable. I can plug the phones directly into my Fusion, or my XDA-2...and get sound just fine - but enter the barrel or extension, and the audio comes back mono. Rather, it comes back in stereo, but only one channel of sound - and at lower volume.

This leads me to the idea that there is obviously an issue with where the conductors are on the cable. The only problem is, I always understood that the first two bands on the cable connector were for mono and stereo, and the third was for the mic. I don't see how the Fusion or XDA-2, or even any of the other amps in my home can playback the audio properly when plugged in directly, but anytime the extensions are used they don't.

Is this an issue with the conductors in the wire, or is this an issue with the extensions I'm using?

I'm starting to itch to sell these...

They're nice and all, but if there's no way around this, then perhaps they are not suitable for 2 channel listening with an amp, and maybe moreso designed for someone with a desktop setup or a phone...not really my cup of tea.

I can't replicate the issue with my R6's, but they obviously don't put out the sound that the Reference ONE's do - nor should they. I'm not sure why a mic was necessary in these headphones really either...I'm still trying to figure that one out.

This is all because of that Apple microphone. It's a 4 conductor cable instead of the typical 3 conductor, so the pins are a bit closer together. Extension cables typically mess this up - they usually need to be pulled out a little bit to get the right contacts to touch each other.

However, there are some 4 conductor 3.5mm cables out there - like this one. This should do the trick for you.
