Hello all,

This is my first post on the Klipsch forum.

I just bought a pair of Klipsch Heresy Series 1 HBR  ( Heresy Birch Raw )

I have not yet gotten these speakers home, but they are on their way;-)

I see that these speakers has a E2 crossover installed by the pictures in the add.

The speaker drivers are not the usual "really good lookin" vintage klipsch drivers with labels and klipsch logos.

My questions are as follows:

1.

I see that the E2 crossover can quite simply be modified to smoothen out the impedance curve.

See this link:

https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/119380-heresy-hbr-i-xover-smoothing-modification/

I just ordered these parts for this upgrade :

2x  12R Jantzen Superes 10W resistor.

http://www.hificollective.co.uk/components/jantzen-10w-superes-resistors.html

2x  15uF Monacor capacitors

http://www.europe-audio.com/Product.asp?Product_ID=11931

These parts are the correct parts/brands to use in this modification setup, right?

2.

Why does not my speakers have the "really good lookin" klipsch drivers?  See attached picture from the add.

3.

Is there any way of checking with a multimeter that the drivers and woofer are OK?

4.

From the serial attached what year are these speakers from?

All help will be greatly appreciated :-)

PS:

Forgot to tell:

I have a NAD 3120 amplifer to use.  Or a bottlehead 2a3 tubeamp.  Any idea which one will suit the Heresy HBR the best?

I think that is a Heresy 1.5... It has the mid horn of a Heresy II, and a removable back of an original Heresy. Can't tell which tweeter is in it.

The serial number shows the year as 84, week 50.

I would consider them better than the originals. I have Heresy IIs, and like the med and tweeter better than the K55 mid and K77 of the originals.

Hi !

Thanks for the replay ;-)  A Heresy 1.5.. OK.   - does this mean that I do not have to tweak the crossover?

Hold on: I got more pictures from the add....

found this post on this forum:

"Posted 03 August 2010 - 10:51 AM

" .....The E2 crossover of course is designed to work with the late model Heresy-I's (post late 1983) that used the K-24 woofer and the K-53/701 midrange...."

the serial on my speakers as you state:  1984 week50.

-this is post late 1983 as mentioned in the quotation above.

PS:  will try to get the boxes back into their origianal state.  unstained birch.

welcome to the forum! :)

nice speakers. I bet they will sound good with your Bottlehead 2A3 amp.you'd better check the network in case of a bad cap. a friend of mine has a 80s Heresy and they used to sound horrible. I recapped the XOvers and they sound a whole lot better in term of clarity and transparency

Hello again,

Thanks ;)

I´m a bit confused about amp suggestions on net around the Heresy and vintage high efficient Klipsch speakers.

Some say low watt tubes  ( singe ended )

Some say low watt solid state

Some say vintage receivers / amps with high damping factor ( huh? )

and

Some say high powered SS.

any good suggestions to make these Heresy´s really sing will be much appreciated.

Welcome to the forum. I have 1979 HBR's, all stock, and think you'll be fine with either of the amps you mentioned, though I prefer tubes. My Dynaco ST70 is 35 watts per channel and has plenty of power to drive the Heresy's to near rock concert volumes, which is painfully loud to me. I've also used a variety of new and vintage solid state gear with very good results, though not as sweet sounding as tubes in my opinion. A common trend among Heresy owners is a lack of bass, which can be remedied by using a sub woofer or increasing it via tone controls. In any case, the Heresy's are great speakers. My recommendation, before modding them, is to listen to them with the equipment you have and get used to how they sound in your environment. Placement and the room itself have a great impact on their performance. Once you've got them set, you'll be in a much better position to decide if any mods are needed. Good luck and enjoy.

Welcome to the forum and nice score. Heresys are quite versatile as far as amping goes. My '82 Heresy sound better after a Dayton 1% recap, removed the LF scratchy breakup and have a better top end than my stock Cornwall III's. They were beaters that were painted black so I stripped them and they were walnut underneath.

I used an entire bottle of Elmers wood glue to reseal the cabinet seams. New speaker gasket tape from PE around drivers and horn mounts. New screws everywhere. If you don't like what you hear you can play with the autoformer connections, dampen horns and speaker baskets.

Congrats on your new addiction! Tubes sound great and there is everything from DIY to spendy stuff. Heresys also like my class D amps. With a sub they are hard to beat.
