Johnthang
Ok I finally got started tonight. bought 2 very large Goncalo Alves boards several years ago. Had no idea what they were for. Sooo here we go. Started with one board 16ft long by 30.5 inches wide by 1in thick. both speaker cabinets will come out of this one board. the photos are in order, as to the rough milling work. It took three of us to pick this board up and get it into the shop.( it was in my neighbor's garage) Im guessing about 350 lbs maybe more. First: section off what I need. Second: split in half. Third: run thru planer( very pretty wood pictures do not do it justice). I was going to use Quarter Sawn white oak and padauk, but I remembered I had these boards, and, well,I like this better. Johnthang
Well day 2 all panels are cut to size. Markings are to keep the panels straight, I want the grain to wrap around the speaker box like the board was bent around it. I really like the look of dovetails, maybe tomorrow night I can get started on the joints. These pictures give an idea what they are going to look like. In the layout for cutting I noticed a few minor blemishes, and was able to work them around so the defects will be in the bottoms (3 very small worm holes). I got very lucky there. The backs and front panels will be 3/4 in birch ply, front panels painted black, I'm thinking about staining back panels, don't know yet.
