Hybrid tube amp?

Recommended Posts

Maynard -  Thanks for checking out my channel!   I know you're retired, but I'd love to see the stuff that you've made.  Got any links or pictures handy?

Sean, I only start threads for those designs which I think will be of interest to the guys.  But thanks for asking.  Here are three more:

Hello Maynard, I briefly looked through the linked threads, and can't wait to read through them in detail.

I agree that you don't need a ridiculous dampening factor to get results, usually anything around one ohm out for an 8 ohm speaker will give great results. Anything over 10 for DF is not going to yield you much improvement. I have had very good luck with low power amps and Klipsch speakers, mainly the heritage series speakers.

Check out the 6LU8, a reasonable amp with just two of these tubes can be made very cheap.

Here is a link to an example of a little bit of money going a long way for good tube performance.

I have been building my own amps and preamps for some time. For those possibly inclined to immediately point out flaws, such as small output transformers, solid state rather than valve rectification for B+ voltages, a pine board instead of a fully-enclosed metal chassis, please consider the fact that we are talking about a budget of $200. One sometimes has to know where to look. The following kit was designed by a very knowledgeable individual, and is being sold by a company that specializes in vintage tube audio electronics (both radio and hi fi - as well as musical instrument). I have purchased parts from them for a long time, and received excellent customer support in all cases.

Also available in monoblock form. Granted one needs to know how to solder, which is simply not a big deal with a little practice. I learned to solder when I was five years old -- it can be easily mastered with just a bit of practice.

Have a look just for fun!
