Improving Satellite Midrange and Top End

Recommended Posts

I have a set of Promedia 2.1 that I've had for a while now. For the price, they are terrific, but I kind of do want something more now. I recently set up a set of hideously expensive studio monitors next to my Promedias, and surprisingly, the Promedias are not far off in terms of audio quality--they're at least close enough for me.

The main differences seem to be that the midrange is recessed, and the highs seem somewhat rolled-off. I was wondering if say, a rear port on the satellites would fix this? Does my suspicion seem reasonable*? Furthermore, this seems like it would be a small adjustment that Klipsch would need to make on future revisions of the Promedias, so why not do it?

* from pictures, the iFi satellites seem to be ported, and their midrange was supposedly smoother than the Promedia line.

As far as I know, the only 2 reasons you port an enclosure is to get more bass or more volume out of it.  It shouldn't affect mids or highs.

Indeed, I would like more volume out of the satellites. Seeing as they don't do much of the bass, the midrange would be enhanced, but perhaps less so.

To cure recessed midrange and rolled-off highs:

We got highly improved sound from our bedroom Promedia 2.1 system by mounting some used ElectroVoice T35 tweeters just above the Promedia 2.1 satellites.  We use used EV X36 crossovers, and some L-pads.  The Xover point is 3,500 Hz, so what most people would call the midrange would not be affected, but it seems to be.  Both the midrange and highs are very crisp and detailed with great brass and cymbals, etc., with most TV and DVDs.  I took a few hours to get the L-pad levels just right.  We tolerate a few edgy moments -- like the announcer who introduces Alex Trebeck on Jeopardy, who we now call "loudmouth" (actually, they are probably just using an inappropriate mic on him ... a ribbon would be good).  The T35 is essentially the same as Klipsch's K77 series used in Klipschorns, La Scala & La Scala II, etc.

If the above are too hard to find, there are other tweeters/crossovers to try.  The Late Radio Shack (a few still exist) used to sell some adequate horn tweeters.  Try Craig's List & Parts Express.

Do you have the ProMedias connected to a computer?
