Those Using Direct Radiating Subs With Khorns

Those of you using this combo where are you xo your subs? Are you running your mains full range or do you use a hpf? If so what frequency are you using it at? Any room treatment or eq, are you listening at a flat frequency response?

I have K's and an SVS dual 12" sub which is crossed at 80hz. With two channel listening, even though I have the mains set to full range with the sub set at a very low setting at 80hz, I always keep the sub turned off. Adding the SVS bass to the K's doesn't mix well with my ears, it doesn't sound as clean and just seems to muddy up things unless I have things turned up a good bit. No room electronic correction used either, as it make the highs shrill and kills the details to my ears. I have tried the pass mode where it rolls the mains out at 80hz, but again the big boom and thump comes in and just seems to head in the wrong direction of clarity and accuracy. With multi channel audio I do run them all as well as the sub, I just keep it really low. With multi channel audio, the content is usually dynamic enough that the sub isn't as dominant, and if it is I just cut it back some.

I've tried it with 80 Hz, 60 Hz and 40 Hz crossovers, and the Klipschorns set for "Small,"  and also with The Khorns running full range ("Large") with each of the above crossovers.  80 Hz with the Khorns set to either "Small" or "Large" sounds and measures best.  No significant phase cancellation.  "Large" has a little more punch.  Sub is not as clean/clear as Khorn bass.  I will try a horn loaded sub someday.

A lot of audio 2 ch guys will xo the subs low because the main are cleaner and snappier in the 40-100 Hz area.  A good point was made in the last statement, xo where it sounds best and no phase/cancellation.

Maybe try setting the lowpass filter on the sub to 63Hz with a -12dB slope and see(hear) what you get.  Then try a -24dB slope?

Sorry Canyonman I guess I am responding to Max2 but you could try something similar if your sub has those options.

I agree except in my system the mains roll off at 90hz due to using a 2 wpc amp, so it is a little tricky for me to get the right balance!!!

Curious, why 63hz and not 60hz?
