Cornman Posted July 23, 2015 Share Posted July 23, 2015 There are quite a few of us now bi-amping our systems, & since acquiring mine I have had this question. Would there be any positive advantages to building (designing) an amp specifically designed to handle just the mids & high fq as the K402 use's - no bass needed . Advantage's in sound quality not necessarily $ savings? We are blessed to have several custom builders on this forum, & as sharp as they are I suspect they would have already built one , but small inquiring minds like mine come up with such questions as I rock out with my Klipsch sweethearts. djk Posted July 23, 2015 Share Posted July 23, 2015 It would seem to be a good situation for a single-ended FET amplifier, possibly with an inductor for the current source. Normally a transformer or inductor would need to be quite large for full-range use, but designed for Mids or HF duty it could be much smaller and more economical. It may be cheaper amp wise but, I don't see any real advantage in making a separate amp for mid's other than cost. I would prefer a full range amp with more versatility. tube fanatic Posted July 23, 2015 Share Posted July 23, 2015 There is no point in having an amp which will boost frequencies which are going to be filtered out. It makes a lot of sense to build one which is band-specific. In fact, a popular route is to build a stereo amp with one "channel" set up for low frequencies, and the other for high frequencies. The two "channels" can be totally different with the low frequency amp having much higher power, for example. Coytee Posted July 23, 2015 Share Posted July 23, 2015 The K402 has some kind of rising HF output to compensate for the CD horn (as I understand....and probably butchered the wording) Can this yet to be designed amp incorporate some of this rising output so less eq is needed with the active (or passive)??
