Moderators Travis In Austin Posted August 19, 2015 Moderators Share Posted August 19, 2015 http://www.boatingmag.com/gear/boatinglab-tests-top-shelf-coolers Yeti, K2, Engle, does anyone have experience with these? Are they worth the price, do they hold up? They rate an Igloo, at half to one third the cost, with equal to better Ice retention
jjptkd
Considering the Coleman is 25% of the price, is half the weight, has better ice retention and lost most of its point difference because of the lack of non-skid feet, (which I'm sure could easily be added) makes it a very simple NO for me, it is not worth the extra cost, in my opinion. But I don't have any experience with the other coolers so maybe I'm missing something?? Edited August 19, 2015 by jjptkd
jimjimbo
I would say that ice retention would be one of the most important "data points".....if you want to go that far when talking about coolers.....but honestly, to me, spending $350 on a cooler would be like spending $500 on a power cable...Don't mean to inflame passions here, but hey, it's just a cooler for cryin' out loud....

I am with you on that, the Igloo Extream is 100 and had best ice retention, I am just try to figure if I am missing something here.

BigStewMan
size and weight perhaps? space on a boat can be at a premium…although i’m not sure that was a factor in their determination.
Moderators Travis In Austin Posted August 19, 2015 Author Moderators Share Posted August 19, 2015 Not going to be using in a boat, but it is a space is a consideration. It was one of the factors they used, probably because it was a boating magazine.

I thought $225 was expensive a few years back, we use this on the mining claims, and all the years and all the coolers we have been through, all this thing has is scratches. The Bay is where we bought ours. Edited August 19, 2015 by minermark

WMcD
Right you are OT. But of course it is French. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lacoste Here in Chicago there is the expensive shopping area of North Michigan Avenue. It is almost entirely clothing. It just shows how much money you can make with a fashion trademark. It seems to extend to coolers too. WMcD Edited August 19, 2015 by William F. USNRET
It's a boat thing. We bought Yeti's for the aircraft; money for nothing, chicks for free. Many generic cost vs performance work great.
swapface
I have not owned the Yeti's but was impressed with the build quality while checking them out a couple of weeks ago planning for a 4 day camping trip. I suspect it would depend on the application. If you are going someplace for a long period of time where ice can not be replenished your ice then it might make sense, otherwise they seem to be to expensive to me. JL Sargent
If I had a mining claim I would buy Yeti too, but since I don't I'll have to stick with Coleman. Right now Yeti has become a status symbol so owning one of those makes you cool. Edited August 19, 2015 by JL Sargent
ssh
I keep a Yeti Roadie in my trunk filled with essentials. It's hot here. About every 3 days, my dogs get the water, which is still cold. I'm satisfied with it. SSH

JJkizak
I learned how boaters spend money when my boss filled up the 600 gallon tanks with fuel for two V8's on one outing. Then you have to pay the dingus for lifting the boat out of the water for winter storage. Then the 150 dollar per gallon stuff to redo the bottom. Then somebody leaves the cutoff switch in the wrong position and you have to pay to have somebody find the problem. Then there is always the prop replacement after running into a log or rock. The radar got full of water and doesn't work. On and on. JJK
