Sub 3k Watch Suggestions

Alright I'm thinking about saving up and buying a nice watch. This watch would eventually go to my son. I have loved the Omega speedmaster pro moonwatch which are within my range if I go used. What do you guys have that you plan on handing down, what do you like about it?

I've got a Wenger Titanium that I bought at the turn of the millennium as a gift to myself for having endured the first four years of engineering college without degree.

Now some guys thumb their nose at Wenger, but real titanium is no joke. You learn rather quickly not to let it catch on anything because it'll dam near rip your arm off before it yields any, yet it's as light as plastic.

The watch is still ticking, looks great, and the band fits just the same as it did 16 years ago.

I can agree with any of the above.

I have a TAG 6000 chronograph/chronometer  Automatic (self winding) with stop watch.  Sporty yet dressy.

My 2 cents is a personal preference of a mechanical watch over a battery watch.  Yes, the battery watch is more accurate but the mechanical watch is more.....well....mechanical!

Digital / analog kinda thing.

If you look at a newer watch, I'd urge you to look at the band and if you see it (or the watch) is stamped China, move on.

Decades ago, I had a PT job and sold the main brands (Seiko, Citizen, Tag and some 14kt brands).  When the Seiko's came in with chinese bands, you (I) could tell a distinct difference in materials when sizing them.

Push a pin out of a japanese/swiss band and the pin snaps out and snaps back in.  Push a pin out of a chinese band and the link would many times, bend.

Mechanical watches need more TLC from time to time than a battery change but for me, that sweeping second hand (verses ticking) is part of the charm

Pic of the 6000 (stolen from ebay)

They don't make them anymore someone has to buy used.

The gold highlights are solid 18kt gold, not a gold tone nor plate.

Saw pictures of this watch....  I yawned.  I saw it in person and tried it on....  I bought it.

I have an Omega Seamaster as well... One of the early "Bond" models (see photo). Purchased new over 10 years ago. No issues at all with it. Though it's past due for service, it still runs perfectly.

Trying to recommend a watch, in a price range, is probably more difficult than a discussion of what speaker cables sound "best". It's going to come down to personal preference and what looks good on your wrist. I'd suggest heading over to the timezone forums and looking around over there. There are MANY different individual brand forums. And places where you could post your original question and get some good (and varied) feedback.

The Omega Speedmaster moon watches are very popular, with many different models. And personally I'd love to own the "Dark Side of the Moon", but it's a bit pricey.

For the price mentioned, and as someone has already posted..... OMEGA. Excellent watches, with some timeless styles.

I bought mine back in 1996, and still have it; still love it, still get compliments (that actually embarrass me), still going strong, no serious problems ever. Only work I had done was to replace the stop watch button cap, and to add a link to the wrist band so it would fit a little looser. Don't remember the style, it was one of many the jeweler had on display, and I liked it.... my then girlfriend (now my wife) had to approve of course.

EDIT:

found a pic of a similar watch, but one I purchased didn't come with a leather band.

Gilbert that is a nice watch. I have several "affordable" watches from citizen, seiko, luminox etc. I really want a watch that will hold its value and one that I can wear casual and dress. Again this will be a heirloom that I give to my son.

Jeff yes I do still buy watches talk on a home phone buy cd's and listen to music through tubes and horns!
