Used car for Taz

So I need to start looking for another car.  Hit one of those cement barriers when I lost control at 80mph.  I never thought much of them before.  But if it had not been there it would have been bad.

As it is I walked away without a scratch.  Got some soreness from seat belt.

The last car I bought was a 2993 Nissan Sentra that I wreaked.  Wife did not ask how bad the car was, But she did ask if my stereo was OK.

I'm hoping to fine something used below ten grand, but could go higher (15) for the right car.

I know Nissan will sometimes bring their model year out a year or so early, but I didn't know they could bring a 2993 model year out 980 years early :D

(I'm no help, I know)

OK I meant  1993.

Not much sleep since Friday.  I don't like it.

I'm not in a hurry and would like to take it slow and informed finding a replacement.

I do mostly around town but have to make trips about 180 and would like something comfortable at least.

Fuel consumption is important.  I was getting 30-34 on the free way.  29-30 in town.

So, you are looking for a compact car.  My family has had great luck with Honda Civics, we have owned four.  Great gas mileage, great reliability, terrific ergonomics, and you can expect they may go up to 200,000 miles or more if you choose to keep it that long.

A mid-model 2010 Civic LX sedan in VG condition in a private sale on average will have 79k miles and sells for $9,000.  The three dealers within 100 miles of me had them listed at 12K, and all those cars had 50K miles or less.

I know you owned a Nissan, but I did not have good luck with the Nissan Altima I owned.  It always had mechanical problems and we could NOT get the check engine light to go out!  We would fix one thing, and the next problem would trigger the check engine light.  I am glad to be rid of it.

Hey Taz,

Since I live in Oregon as well I thought I would chime in on this. I just bought a used Lincoln LS about 3 months ago and could not be more happy with the car and its features. They were manufactured between 2000 - 2006. One unique feature is that its rear wheel drive which I prefer. Not many of them out there any more. There are many out there on CL almost all under $10k and under 100k miles.

Good luck with your search!

as much as I wanted to hate my mazda 3 4 door, I couldn't. it was fun to drive....zoom, zoom. great gas mileage and plenty of room also. had mine for aboot 2 years. not a single problem.

the 5 door may be even more practical for you. check out CarMax's website. not to specifically buy from there, but you can see the price ranges...CarMax is a little high with theirs.....and also interior and exterior shots of just aboot every kind of car except exotics.

Taz,

It doesn't get as good mileage, But I bought a 2006 Buick Le-sabre when it had only 30,000 miles on it.

The car has 265,000 miles on it now and still runs like a top and I abuse the **** out of it.

Roger

I may end up with something more comfortable and less millage.  Have a PU I can drive while I'm looking.

Thanks to all so far that have made their view know.

I vote for a audi a6 4.2 v8, I have had two of them and I know someone who has had the same engine in A8's. The engine runs forever and is the same engine and transmission that they put twin turbos on in s6's.  My wife and son were standing still and were t-boned at the B pillar by a ford f 250 work van at 40 mph and walked away, plus the Quattro  system is awesome. Look at the video on you tube audi a8 in the snow. Cars, Suv's , and trucks are sideways, in ditches and cant move, and the a8  just rolls along around all of them. My sister drove mine and within a week she traded in here brand new 100,000 Mercedes and bought an A8. Its so much nicer than the Mercedes she had its sad... the Mercedes was a joke..

Hey Taz.....

1st I'm glad your ok....

So for my two cents....this is what I tell my customers when they are looking for a used car. If you find a car that's in your price range and ya like it....google complaints on that year and modle. If there are known issues with it..... it'll be on the internet....people like to complain.

For example if you were to google complaints on....... let's say 2012 Honda Pilot.... you would probably find a lot of people talking about oil consumption problems.

Now that's a big problem you don't want to have to deal with. I'm talking about big mechanical issues like that.

There are a lot of good cars.....each manufacture will have it's own set problems.....some big some small.

You say you have $10-$15 to spend on a used car.....that should get ya a nice used car.

When you find one try to get the maintance on the car.....see what's been done to it....

Good luck to ya....

MKP :-)

Other than not being eally quiet on the inside, I absolutely love my Subaru Forester. Excellent handling with the all wheel drive. I get about 32mpg on the hwy, much less in town and I am up and down Lookout mountain going to work and home. Insurance has been inexpensive as it only has a 2.5 liter engine. Acceleration is still very good, even with a load in the back. I'm up to Almost 180k on it (2007)
