big fat compression drivers in smaller speakers?

Went to Scrappy's house this weekend. Let's just say that KPT-904's sounded way different than I expected, especially on music. Wasn't nearly as much midbass slam as I expected with 6 15's, but that may be due to system setup and Audessey plus listening volume.

However, the compression drivers were also way different than I expected, way smoother. As one obvious example, I like to watch Metallica's concert movie and the cymbals are a big pet peeve of mine. When messing with different speakers, the cymbals kinda sounds like:

with the Reference 1" tweeters: "PSSSSSSS"... like a higher pitched hiss, they sometimes sound kinda shallow

with RF-7ii's: "PSSSSSHHHHH"... significantly deeper sounds

KPT-904's: "CRASSSHHHH"... without the super high end ear piercing stuff. Or, pretty much like they ought to sound.

Curious as to what it would take to get that sound but in a smaller and prettier form factor. Seems like one of those and two 12" pro audio woofers in a cabinet that is half that wide and finished like the RF-7ii's would be awesome.

I'd say start with the K510 and figure out a bottom for it.  I don't know about passives but with an active, I'd venture to guess you could mate it with:

Cornwall

Belle

LaScala

After all, didn't the speakers you listened to have the 510 on top?  If so then you now know what they can do for you.

Of course, if you want balls to the wall, go K402.

Of course, if you want balls to the wall, go K402.

It's not behind the screen so something that is internal would be nice. Seems like those KI-396's would be nice. Just not a very pretty finish.

C'mon.....you don't hear with your eyes.

This is why we get in trouble with our better halves, we let our eyes dominate our thoughts for the first 6 months and then our ears are ringing for the next 30 years

By the way, I did not say that and will deny, deny, deny.  In today's political climate, surely I can get away with that?

If it is on the interwebs it MUST be true!

the size is part of what it is that you like. larger diaphragm drivers have lower distortion because they don't have to move as much so a three inch driver diaphragm is where you start to see really significant improvements in distortion figure. Large format is where it is at. If you don't like the size there are neo magnet versions that will help shrink overall size and weight but you have to have the big diaphragms to get the big improvements in distortion figures.
