Klipsch RF-5 Speaker Value

Hi all,

I've started shopping for home theater speakers and came across some Klipsch RF-5 speakers on craigslist.

http://columbus.craigslist.org/ele/5216441047.html

I wanted to ask the community if these speakers are worth the $600 asking and if you'd recommend them for my 20x15' home theater room?  Or should I go with something newer?  $600 for my two front speakers is the price range I'm looking for.

Thanks!

El Guapo

Hi El Guapo.  Welcome to the forums!

I've owned two pair of RF-5's over the years.  They are great speakers, just not as large sounding or as much bass as the RF-7's.  You will want to find a matching RC-7 center channel as it is an incredible and very capable center.

Are they worth $600?  Absolutely. Are they at the very top end of the market?  Probably so.  Can you find them for much less?  Absolutely.

Here is a pair for $350 - Link

Another for $600 - Link

RF-5 and RC-7 for $500 - Link

if you'd recommend them for my 20x15' home theater room?

They will have no problem filling a 15' x 20' room with great sound.

Or should I go with something newer?

Newer = More Expensive.  With a $600/pair budget, you won't be able to come close to the perfomance of the RF-5.

I talked him down to $500.  Assuming everything sounds well, I'm picking them up tomorrow.

What reciever and sub would you recommend to pair with the RF5s?

The home theater room will be used mostly for movies, video games, sports, and music...probably in that order.  I eventually am going to upgrade to a 5.1 system, but probably never go to 7.1

Welcome!

I have had Onkyo, Integra and Denon receivers. I have been happy with all of them. Right now, I am partial to the Denon/Marantz lines. For subs there are a lot of options. I have built my own in the past. Currently have a pair of Klipsch. There are several brands that are good.

My advice would be to let everyone know your budget for your receiver and the sub(s) and you will have plenty of excellent advice from the community here and lots of first hand experience. Not sure where you are located, but I know a person close to me is selling an excellent Klipsch sub.

Good luck and enjoy the sickness...

I don't really have a budget.  That being said, I'm looking for a relatively cost effective reciever that will supply sufficient power the RF5s

I was hoping to get away without a pre-amp with the 2.1 setup and then will buy an amp when I upgrade to 5.1.

I'm located in Ohio but travel to the Missouri area for business often.  Does he have his Kilpsch sub posted somewhere?

The bottom end really improves with a stout amp so be sure if you go the receiver route, find one that has a good amplification section.  You could also use the receivers pre-outs and run a separate amp if necessary.

I totally agree with this....Mine never sounded so good as when they were paired with a quality amplifier...I run mine also as a stereo rig using Luxman seperates and 100+ watts, for Home Theatre I use a Harman Kardon  AVR3600 receiver, while I found this receiver to be the best of anything I auditioned, it can't hold a candle to the Luxman for sound quality, the improvement is very apparent, especially in the low end.

You can look at integrated amps for a 2.1 for a turn key solution.  Be sure it has a sub out, or were you thinking of just using a receiver in 2 channel mode?

No, I would want a sub out on the reciever.  For now the 2.1 turn key option would be the most appealing while still allowing me to upgrade to 5.1 while adding an amplifier in the near future.   I certainly want good sound quality, but don't consider myself anything of an audiophile (which should be evident by my lack of knowledge).

So I need to look for a reciever with an integrated amp and sub out.  Is there an minimum wattage you would suggest?

No.  Forget the integrated amp comment I made as that's not the road it seems you want to take.

Look for a receiver with pre-outs.  You can use these down the road with an outboard amp.

Wattage numbers are meaningless now a days as manufacturers fudge the numbers and it's really no indication of how much current they deliver.  Find a receiver that sounds good with Klipsch speakers and get an amp down the road to properly push them.  I haven't used a receiver in years so I'm not the one to ask.  I went the pre/pro-outboard amp route and never looked back.  Starting out however I had a H-K.
