WMcD
So nice. Mike Masse has a lot of covers of "old" songs on YouTube. All good. This has a slightly Bluegrass sound. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0rQ_XSlc9g You'll find much on Jenny too. WMcD
wvu80
What a terrific video find! What's the story, was Mike Masse in Boston originally? His voice is incredible! And that Jenny...wow. Listen near the very end, she just rips those 32nd notes on that violin! When I hear the music I don't think Bluegrass, I hear more of the sound of modern or contemporary country music with the acoustic guitar and violin. I heard great vocals, great musicians, great musical arrangements. Edited November 6, 2015 by wvu80

WMcD
No, it seems that Mike is far too young to have been involved originally in any of the music he is covering. I came across his YouTube looking for Simon and Garfinkle's Canticle. Like in most research, you find something while looking for something else. One issue with me is that so much pop and rock relies on vocals in very high registers. How do they do that? My quip is that The Beach Boys recorded songs before their voices changed, growing out of puberty. But, yes, he is hitting the high registers and of course is very good on the 12-string. Jenny is a very well respected violinist. Masters from Julliard. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jenny_Oaks_Baker I wonder about violin players. Someplace I read a caustic criticism by a teacher to a student. "You can't hear a half-tone." Meaning that the student does not perceive pitch with sufficient accuracy to ascertain what he or she is fretting (?). Jenny may have that gift. Something like perfect pitch. Wang Chung (?). Of course starting at age four helps or is a manifestation of a an innate gift which is engendered. WMcD

DizRotus
He's a recovering lawyer. The story of his young son, Noah's, brain tumor is heartbreaking. By financially supporting Mike's music, you support Noah. I will be downloading some music later this afternoon. WMcD
Ya gotta wonder. What would it take to get him to an Indy or Hope gathering. It maybe be beyond our means to arrange a private engagement. But perhaps he could be booked into a nightclub or stadium, particularly at Indy, while we're there. When and if we are there. Like http://www.noblesvilleamphitheater.com/ BTW I see several studio quality microphones used in at least one of the videos. Is that a Neumann TLM 102? WMcD Edited November 7, 2015 by William F. DizRotus
I downloaded Mike's Something album in hi-res FLAC from Loudr for $10. What a tremendous deal. Not only do you get to enjoy Mike's talent, but you help support Mike and his family in their efforts to combat his young son Noah's brain tumor. thebes
By God man! You do know, don't you, that this is an equipment audio site staffed by divers experts in all things audio, yet you link to a video with a 33 record sitting beside a 78 speed gramophone. The horror, the horror of it all.

"The horror, the horror of it all." = = = = Thebes: What you see is the remnants of a project where Alvin and the Chipmunks attempted to create a recording of Carmina Burana in their unique choral style – using 78 rpm playback of a 33 1/3 rpm LP as a model. David Seville, their manager, feared that the bombastic opening O Fortuna was beyond the capabilities of the chipmunk voices even with multi-layering techniques and his concerns proved to be tragically prophetic. During the famous opening crescendo, Alvin and Theodore suffered a type of rodenta pneumothorax and perished within the hour while Simon simply exploded. Stricken by deep mourning and self reproach, Dave Seville is in seclusion. The recording studio is trying to remove chipmunk viscera from a Neumann U47 microphone.
