My Chorus and My 1000th post....

Recommended Posts

It's been almost a month since I have posted something on the forum and it's been killing me.. I wanted my 1000th post to be somewhat special...

I was going to post something like.....my Klipsch/audio journey for the last 25+ years....but I just could not get my thoughts together. I have a hard time taking my thoughts out of my head and putting them into written form. My brain just does not work good like that.

Like most of my speakers and audio gear my Chorus that I'm about to tell you about come with a story... A story that I think is worthy of "My 1000th post"... So here goes.....

The Chorus........

While surfing the E-bay some 8-9 years ago I came across a set of Chorus I's. They had a starting bid of 99 cents, so they caught my attention. I clicked on the pics to see some really bad looking cabs. I mean these thinks were busted. The corners were gone on most of the top of the cabs. There were only four pics just enough to show how bad they were. All four pics were taken with the grills on, so I could not see any of the horns or woofers. A very brief description that didn't tell me a whole lot. So I placed my bid and I forgot about the auction. To this day I forget how much I bid but it wasn't much.

As some of you guys might know my wife and I work together. We own a small auto shop and it's just me and her. So at the shop one afternoon my wife yells in the bay at me.. "hey you won those Klipsch"..... I was really at a loss, I really forgot about the auction. I went into her office to see what she was talking about. As soon as I looked at them it "clicked". She asked me what they are, I told her they are some Bad A$$ speakers..... Now my wife loves our audio gear... she was the one that found our LaScala's some 25+ yeras ago.

So we looking at these really bad looking Chorus and she said something like... are you sure you want those?? I was at a loss, I won them for less than $30.... I forget how much I got them for but it was something like 27 bucks. The auction house was down in Washington DC... Down in the hood. DC is about an hour drive for me... but I hate driving in DC.

I'm thinking let me call the auction house and get the scoop on these things. Like I said there were no pics of any of the drivers and if these are just bare busted cabs I'm going to pay for them and tell them to trash em. I wanted to keep my 100% feedback on my E-bay. But I was not going to drive in that DC hell for some busted up cabs.

The call went something like this.... The guy told me that they sold these Klipsch for a customer several weeks ago. They shipped them but they got damaged in the shipping. This is how they got them back. They made a claim and everyone was made whole. He said they just want to off these Klipsch to someone that could use them. He said they were 100% working before the shipping damage, but had no clue if they work now.. but all the drivers are in the cabs. I told him I would be down tonight to pick them up. They were open late into the evening so I didn't have to fight that 5-6 hour DC hell traffic.

The drive down there was not to bad....it was not that deep into the DC hood like I thought it was. We pay my man for them and loaded them into van. We got back to the house around 10:00 or so. I got them into the house and had a good look at them.... they looked much worse in the pics...oh they were still ugly.... well lets hear them... a quick hook up to one of my amps. Put about 20 watts to em and I could quickly tell somethings not right. One of the woofers was blown. But the other one was 100%. Now it just so happens I had a pair of K-48's in the basement. I got them years ago for something. I forget why I got them but I have them.. I get crapp from my wife about the stuff I buy. My wife was just shaking her head when I came upstairs with the woofer. I swapped out the offending woofer and put the watts to em..... Oh my they sound great.... the wife was like holy shitt.

Despite how they looked these things kicked.... The cabs were still solid... I was very happy..

The Chorus was one of the 1st klipsch speakers I heard many many years ago. My old x brother-in-law brother got four of them when they 1st came on the market. He powered them with two Carver cube's. I never forgot that sound... it blew me away.... Now I have a set for a really good price.

I must now end this  1000th post.....ohhhh I'm not done... I'm just getting started on the story of these Chorus... Like I said It is really hard for me to put things into written form and my brain is killing me right now. This is just how I got these things... and I am also at my home computer and this thing is slow and if I loose this I'm going shitt a brick...

I hope you like it so far.... I will continue later and I will get the wife to load some pics tomorrow at the shop.

Stay tuned.....

Congrats on your 1000th post. I heard Chorus for the first time a few weeks back at Matthews. I was very impressed. Cant wait to read the next few chapters in the history of your speakers. Good to have you back, seems like the mean spirited posters are winning here lately!

That's the way you do it......Did you see Matts post on the ones he got in KC. I got my Ks with white house paint all over them and not done by anyone who ever painted before. After many hours and many headaches I got them done. You going to fix or make new cabs for yours? And where is the pics? Rick

Do you still have spare K48's laying around?

Hey DrWho....I do have a spare set of K48's.....these came in a set of ChorusII's that I got.....but they are not in good shape. A cat got to em. When I got these ChorusII's the pass rads were trash and the cat had also got to the woofers.

Now what I did was.... the blown woofer that came out my Chorus I got re-coned...so I had two good spare woofer again. So when I picked these ChorusII's up I just swaped out the woofers and I had my speaker guy re-cone the pass rads.

Yes ricktate....I was all up on Matts post....that was great post and they came out fantastic. I will not be making new cabs, I will get into that on my next post.....and the pics....yes I'm trying...it's so dam hard to get pics on this forum, me and the wife was fooling with that yesterday..

Thanks for all the kind words guys.....stay tuned....it's gonna get good, cuz I almost lost these speakers.

  • 2 weeks later...

Continuing.........

The Chorus were up and sounding good. They stayed in the house for some time. The only thing I did was clean them up a bit and put that K-48 woofer in one.

A year or so after I got the Chorus I got a set of Chorus II's. The Chorus II's were beat up a bit....right away I took them to a guy that does some speaker work and he fixed them up a good bit....made them look "ok" and got them working good.

So when I got my Chorus II's back I thought I would take my Chorus  to my shop and I would fix up those busted cabs. I was going to sand them down....put some bondo in the corners and just paint them black. So I removed all the drivers and took those cabs to the shop and started my thing. I worked on them for a good bit... then, like a lot of things I just stopped working on them.

They stayed at the shop for well over a two years....just sitting in the corner. I wasn't pressed to get them done...I had my Chorus II's at the house. But every so often I would walk in the one bay and see them sitting there.... I would say to myself " man I gotta get those things done"

One day we had a customers car towed in.... it was my man Chad..... Chad had an old 1989 Honda Accord. Chad was the son of a customer that had been coming to the shop for a looong time.... I knew the whole family....

I did my magic on this old Accord and got it fixed up for Chad. The next night Chad and his brother came out to the shop to get the car and pay me... These guys were cool.... we all got along... so at the shop we are just shooting the chitt.. We were in the bay listening to some tunes. They thought my shop system sounded sooo good. At the time my shop system was some Bose 901's hanging in the corners powered by an old Adcom...it was ok for a shop system. I told these guys I got some kick-*** speakers and amps at my house. I told them I got Klipsch speakers... They had no clue.... I took the guys in the bay were my Chorus had been for years now. I wanted just to show them. I was telling them that these things will pound your chest with bass. I was telling them I was alittle pissed at my self for letting them sit here for so long and I have got to get back on them.

Chad looks at me and says " I can do them for you".... I was like.....what??..... He said "dude I do all kinds of wood work"...He told me he did all kinds of veneer work... he pulled his phone out and showed me some pics of the things he was working on and some of the things he has done. The pics looked really good. So we talk for a bit on how I wanted them finished. He said no problem....

That night we made an agreement..... he does my speakers and he had no bill at my shop... we shook hands like two men.. Now Chad is a bit younger that me... but he was no kid. He had been coming to my shop since he was a teenager. His dad 1st brought him to my shop when he was around 18 years old. His dad told him you bring you car to Mr. Mark and he'll get ya fixed up.

later that week Chad came to the shop and picks up my Chorus speakers. You could tell he was really excited about doing this for me. I think he really knew how well I took care of him and his family. What I didn't know was I would not see these speakers or Chad again for almost four years!!!

Now I didn't think I would be getting my cabs back in a week or two.... and I was thinking it might even be a month or so... I think it might have been three month.... I thought let me call my man and see whats up.... On the phone Chad tells me he started them... he's got the new veneer. He also tells me he's getting married and he is super busy... but is trying to get to them... I'm like dude....it's all good... take your time... it's "ok".....    yea I'm a nice guy....sometimes to nice.... soooo I let a few more months go buy.....still no speakers no Chad..... I'll give him another call.... more of the same stuff.....he's really sorry.... he's been really busy.... I'm moving....blah blah blah... He tells me.... I will get them done...

Sometimes you loose track of things....you loose track of time...well I do... At this point of time my speakers had been MIA for two years or so. I would call but no answer and no return call. Now I'm thinking am I going to get these cabs back at all??

Now there's one person you don't want to piss off...... my wife.... My wife does not come out the gate ready to attack... but I tell ya she will go for the throat... My wife puts up with very little bullshitt... and buy this time the speaker deal was bullshitt. She tells me "I'm getting you Klipsch back and I'm getting the money Chad owes you". So now my wife is on it.

The 1st thing she does is get a hold of Chads brother to get a good number. Cuz at this time the number we had for Chad was no good. She gets Chads brother and tells him what has gone down... Chads brother tells my wife that Chad has moved to Ohio and he does not know where the speakers are. He also tells my wife this is the type of shitt he has done before. He give my wife his number. She gets Chad on the phone and tells him how disappointed she is with him. How could he do something like this to her husband.... the man that took care of him for so long.

My wife has a way with words.... she did not yell... she didn't even raise her voice. At the end of the call I think he was in tears. He said he would be coming to town soon and he would get the speakers to me and pay the money for the car repairs.

Again......more and more time goes buy..... no Chad.... no speakers.....    It's almost four years..... Life goes on... we got a shop... we got kids.... we got grandkids.... we have bigger fish to fry than chasing some speakers....

Now a month ago... or so I was following Matthews post on his Chorus that he got... I loved his thread, I was showing my wife. Telling her that Matt is going to have "new" cabs made. I was showing her how Mookie made the new motor boards and all the new cabs. At the end of Matts post I showed her the Cabs that Mookie and Mattews and done. They were soooo nice..

Man it got me thinking.... I still have all my driver's and x-over's for the Chorus... I wonder if Mookie would make a set of motorboards for me??? Would he make all the panels and just ship them to me???

It's funny how things work out... that week I sent Mookie a pm telling him the story about the Chorus. I asked him if he would make me all the panels for the speakers or would he make just the motorboards? There would be shipping and I knew it might be something that he just might not want to do.... and that's "ok" ... If I just got the motorboards done I could have a woodshop make the rest for me.. A few days later Mookie got back to me and told me he would make the motor boards... that would be the best thing to do.... I told him I would get back to soon....

Buy me showing Matts thread to my wife was like opening up an old wound..... That week she found Chad on the internet... he had started his own company he was back in Maryland. She got all his info.... My wife called me in her office and told me what she was going to do. She said " I have Chads new number at his company, I'm going to call him and tell him if he does not bring you speakers back by the end of this week she was going to the court house and file theft charges" if he doesn't have the speakers she wants the money for the car repairs. The fist call she made she got voice mail... she left a detailed message on what was going to happen.. With in ten minutes Chad calls. Again my wife did not yell but simply state what she was going to do. Chad said he would be at my shop Friday by noon. He had to go to his dads house to pick-up my speakers. where they had been all this time.

At 11:30 Friday Chad pulls into my lot... I walked out to his truck to meet him. He got out and was waiting for me. I stood in front of him and the fist words to be spoken was " Mark I never meant to do this to you I am so sorry" He was viziably upset. Now I'm not a big a$$ hole... but I'm not going to tell you "oh it's ok buddy"  I told him that he disrespected me and I was not real happy with what went down. We unloaded the speakers out of the truck... just as they were the day he took them almost four years ago. We spoke for a good bit, he said I can't belive you didn't yell at me or punch me in the face when I got out of the truck... I told him that's not what real men do...  a lot had gone down in those years... his dad  passed away and his wife left him while he was in Ohio.

Before he left the shop he said he wanted to make things right...He gave me $500 to get the speakers done. To this day I don't think Chad is a "bad" guy.... Before he left I thanked him for getting the speakers back to me and for the money. I also gave him some words of wisdom... If I tell someone I'm going to do something then I do it..... If for some reason something comes up that changes what I told them I was going to do... then I need to talk to them and not hide and tell lies... This is how Iv'e run my shop for all these years. I don't bullshitt people... I hope he has learned something from this.

So that, my Klipsch peeps is the story of my Chorus.... I hope you liked it.

Oh the day I got them back is the same day I took them to the woodshop down the road from me. I will keep you all posted on how they turn out...

Again a quick thanks to Mookie for saying he would help me out.... and a thanks to you to Matt for your post... cuz I really think it got my wife fired up again...
