The local Jewel had somebody giving out free samples so i picked up a bottle, and then some more. I'm not a big drinker but do love a good Bourbon once and a while. Sipping Maker's 46, now. There are some very good $20 whiskeys available. Start with Four Roses. I'm partial to Small Batch, but it's not $20. Crown Royal is a blend, but smooth. Jim Beam Black; much as I dislike McBourbon, Jim Beam does a credible job throughout its line. Buffalo Trace. Evan Williams Single Barrel, though I've not tried it. It is cousin to Elijah Craig, aged in some of the same barrelhouses. The 12-y.o. Small Batch is quite good. Jim Beam Black is probably the best bang for the buck whiskey you can get and its aged 8 years. If I want more of a "Western" whiskey ill go for some Bulleit Bourbon and Makers Mark is decent but sweeter. If you want something special get some Angels Envy. Its straight bourbon finished in Port casks and has an amazing subtle sweetness without a sugar or artificial flavor. Can't really compete with Buffalo Trace or Knob Creek though. I live fairly close to a place that makes stills, would love to mess around with that, but it's pretty illegal even for personal use in Kentucky, which is odd with the still makers being based in Kentucky. Of course, it's just highly illegal in Kentucky, there's even a law that allow them to seize your land if you're caught. In Missouri you can make it for your own consumption. Kentucky only allows beer and wine, they're much more strict about moonshine. Just not worth the risk. I even went to a mini-conference put on by the still maker looking into it but there's so many legal hoops and taxes I just can't see it happening. I don't know what's different about it but my friends seem to have a thing for it. Apparently there are investors out there just dying to fund new distilleries, they view aged bourbon as a sure bet. Craft distilleries making unaged moonshine are what's booming though. These guys down the road are shipping them all over the world.
