Mallette
This is not something we of more temperate climes understand. Immortal Herodotus wrote of feathers falling from the sky in those realms far north of the Greeks where barbarians dwell. Is it of this you speak? It must be a fascinating phenomenon. Moderators Travis In Austin Posted November 21, 2015 Moderators Share Posted November 21, 2015 What is a snow warning? Is that like a storm warning? A certain amount of snow in a certain amount of time. What technically is a "blizzard"? Does the "lake effect" happen each and every year?
The History Kid
What is a snow warning? I believe Tim meant a Winter Storm Warning. "Heavy Snow Warnings" have not been used since 2012 when WFO's condensed the number of winter weather headlines. This removed both the Snow Advisory and the Heavy Snow Warning headlines from use. Is that like a storm warning? A certain amount of snow in a certain amount of time. Criteria varies from WFO to WFO. Usually it's 6 hours where snowfall rates exceed 1" per hour, or 8+" in an 18 hour period. What technically is a "blizzard"? A period where falling or drifting snow combines with high winds to reduce visibility to or below 1/4 of a mile for 3 hours or longer. Does the "lake effect" happen each and every year? Lake effect occurs due to temperature contrasts between the land and a body of water, creating it's own low pressure center and thus creating an enhanced line of snow activity. It's not dependent on a calendrical value.

Quiet_Hollow
Snow here near Tucson. We've had a few nights dipping below freezing now. No break it seems..Late October went from unseasonably warm, high 90's, then plummeting straight into the high 40's. KVOA Early snow Mt. JJkizak
It always snows then eventually melts. It always rains then eventually dries up. The wind blows and eventually stops blowing. The sun shines sometimes and sometimes doesn't. It gets really cold sometimes and then warms up. It gets really hot sometimes and then cools off. It will happen this way for the next 4 billion years, one year after another like clockwork. JJK
The History Kid
Thing is, from all points of view this was an isolated event. Almost every tool available to forecasters has less than 2" from about where I am south. Lots of rain though.
jason str
Going out to start the snowthrower right now for the first time this season. Should start right up, rebuilt the carbeurator last year. Too slushy this morning, nice and cold out now so should work ok as long as its not all ice. Probably 7-8 inches or so here. WMcD
I'm about four miles north of the Loop (downtown) and there has been rain mixed with a little snow. Not much accumulation. For those not familiar with Chicago weather: The wind has been from the Northwest. This means the cold air from the north moves down the length of Lake Michigan and picks up moisture. Hence lake effect snow falling on Northern Indiana and Western Michigan.. This is on top of whatever else is going on. WMcD
Arrow#422
17 inches as of 6:30 in Howell, MI and under a winter storm warning and blowings snow advisory until 10pm... Sorry, corrected everything.! Wow, looks like you just kept getting hit by the snow bands - hope you have a 2 stage snow thrower ! That is the norm for us to the West when Lake MIchigan contributes heavily to lake effect snows that your area never sees. My driveway is only "slightly" slushy, with 4-5 inches of wet heavy snow on the grass - roads are wet only here. I'm thankful that shovels or snowblower activation isn't needed - YET Jim
