thebes
At least I think it was. I may have seen them over the years and never know what they were. Now for those not in the know, The Leslie is a speaker/amplifier, traditionally paired with a Hammond B2 or B3. Unlike our speakers it is not a sound reproducer but maker of sound. Used by many famous bands, and a major part of the sound of the early Animals. Last weekend I was at jam given by the Charlottsville, VA Blues Society in a converted movie theater in the small nearby town of Scottsville. During a change of bands a guy rolls ina Leslie and I immediately make a beeline for the stage to look it over and ask questions. Couldn't figure out what the power tubes were and he couldn't remember, but hey were bigger than EL34's probably 6550 or something similar. The sound? Awesome even though it wasn't paired with a B3. Couldn't figure out what he was playing it with and forgot to ask him before he started his set. Here's a link to a very detailed discourse on this very unique bit of speaker history. http://www.theatreorgans.com/hammond/faq/mystery/mystery.html
xxJPMxx
Nothing sounds like a Leslie. If I was a professional musician I would lug one around to use with my guitar, just the tweeter version. I always remember seeing Phil Lesh's Leslie on the bottom of his stack turning like crazy on some songs and others really slow, some of my friends thought it was a vacuum. The Dude
I have seen these at a local shop, where they were building a preamp for it so they could run a guitar through if unique sounds. Cool story, thanks for sharing and party on.
Moderators Travis In Austin Posted November 22, 2015 Moderators Share Posted November 22, 2015 A remarkable speaker, Brian Wilson on Pet Sounds used by Lennon for vocals, Clapton on Badge, a lot of fun stuff.

J Free
Very cool, it is a unique device. I have a 145 with a 147 amp, I've had it for many years. I don't miss moving it around. Granted there is nothing like being in the presence of the beast as a player, but from the audience perspective I can get the same sound out of something much lighter. I like vintage sounds, but I like that my one keyboard now can be a Rhodes, Wurli, 2 Grand Pianos, a B3, and a slew of synths. That plexi one is cool-wonder how it sounds? Don Richard
The place I used to work for made repair parts, such as the bearing between the compression driver and the spinning horn, for a guy that restores Leslies. He told me that the amplifiers were robust and could survive full output with the speakers disconnected. Many tube amps, both guitar amps and home hifi, will fry if operated that way Edited November 22, 2015 by Don Richard

thebes
My first Leslie? Well, it was 1962 at Washingtron High and the sememster had just begun.... ...I felt it was one of those years when my spelling would improve, but on the personal hygiene facial front things were in disarray. I was fated to spend the year between outbreaks of pustulating zits and leaking boils. It was hampering my pretentious to my self-appointed role as "coolest dude around". That's when Leslie came along. She had ruby lips and shapely hips...

That's when Leslie came along. She had ruby lips and shapely hips...She should have walked right on by, but she caught my eyes, and saw the pure adulation, wonder and awe, not the lust and leering she was accustomed to from the other young boys. A look she'd known since junior high, where she frequently heard them whisper "****" to each other with cupped hand over their mouth. As common with so many similar girls who just looked older, she has never even kissed a boy. Her life was about to change.Sent from my SM-T330NU using Tapatalk
