? Tube tuner.

I have a HH Scott 350 Turner that I got a while back from a form member that is in great shape cosmeticly. I finally hooked it up after thanksgiving dinner Thursday evening.(Hope y'all had a great holiday) I was shocked at how good it sounds, beats any tuner I have listened to thus far.

When we first got it going in stereo mode it sounded great maybe 15 min, then it started to sound a garbled and motor boating. If I run it in mono it sounds great,Same thing this morning. Is this something that could be caused by a tube? Reading what I found on the internet some say they fixed similar issues with a new tube but I also read it will need a alignment if the tubes are changed.I also read where someone replaced a cap that was in circuit for the multiplexer and fixed it. I will eventually like to recap it and get it realigned. But for now I was wondering if there was something like a tube or capacitor swap that would make it useable short term.

Well it turns out I had two tubes testing marginal good and one tube tested positive for a short on one side. I rep!aced all three and walla Turner works great! If you are into tubes and listen to radio you should think about trying a tube Turner I'll bet you won't be disappointed. And the majority of them can be had fairly cheep.

I wound up with an embarrassing amount of $$ in my Scott 350 tuner... Wasn't my intention to invest so much but I'm glad I have it.  I thought it had been recapped already when I got it.  It's a nice match to the 299b.

This is the guy to go to for alignments:

Mike Williams - http://www.radioxtuners.com/   - cost a little over a 100 with shipping if I remember correctly.

Not before sending to NOSValves for recap first though.

Congratulations on your fix!  That is always satisfying!

Thanks for the link, its going to need a realignment.

How do you ad a link in a post? I have a handy one for determining values of resistors I wanted to ad to the little sweetie topic.

Add the link to your post and highlight (hold left mouse button while moving pointer across link).  Click on the "Link" icon (looks like a chain link) and enter the link (http://...).  You can highlight any word for that matter.  Hope that is clear enough

I'm trying to figure which forum member sold this to you. At our ages, no one is " . . . a forum member that is in great shape cosmetically."

if the bad tube is in the tuning section you will need to get it aligned if you put a new tube in it. If the bad tube is in the power section you will be ok changing it...

To clarify a point for users of vintage tube type tuners and receivers, oscillator, RF and IF stages do not need realignment when tubes are replaced.  Capacitor replacement is another story.

Thanks for clarifying Maynard,I'll wait till I get it recapped before the realignment. By the way the link muel gave looks to be reasonable on price .

Stacy-

You can enjoy listening to your tuner while you prepare a batch of cleaner. Don't hesitate to contact this cosmetically challenged forum member if you need assistance.

Well for $50 I bought this Dyna (Dyanco) FM1 tuner, with instruction manual, home today.  Alignment requires no test instruments, only use of the dual magic eye.  It  works but I haven't had a chance to hook it up yet.  It only has one electrolytic capacitor, a 40/40/20/20 350v can.  That and maybe the diodes in it are probably all that will need replacing.

Supposed to sound real good and the guy who built the kit did a nice soldering job.

Nice score Thebes. I'll be curious to hear what you think of the Fm1 once you get it fired up. I was pleasantly surprised how good a tube Turner sounds and how reasonable they are to buy.

I also have a Lt-110 that matches my LK-72 but I want to recap it and get it aligned before I befor I hook it up.

It will just have to wait its turn with the soldering iron, the MC 225 is next then the little sweetie build.

To many projects not enough spare time!!

Thanks Stacy.  I've fired it up through test speakers,  but the channels do not lock on very well, so I'm going to have to at least test out the tubes before putting in my main system.

The cool thing about the tuner is it was a kit and can be aligned without  test instruments that I don't have.

I'm looking forward to hearing it up and running.
