mcp Posted November 28, 2015 Share Posted November 28, 2015 I have owned many of the Heritage series over the years, but what can you tell me about the KG 4.2, 5.2 4.5, 5.5 speakers? A good reference point is the KG4's, which were the first speakers I ever purchased. How do they compare? I have seen some locally for sale and I am intrigued by the tower proportions vs. the shorter 4's. My room is bass shy, do they have a generous low end? Jim Posted November 28, 2015 Share Posted November 28, 2015 I own the KG 3.0, KG 4.2, and have owned the KG 3.5. The 3.0 are a very nice speaker for their size and give off nice bass response. My 4.2's are even nicer and I did the Crites crossovers and tweeters. They can take a good pounding as well and with a bunch of stuff either musically or with HT, you don't really need a sub depending on the size of the room and room acoustics. The 3.2's were in between those two and were used more on my end for rear and side surrounds as well as with a sub for 2 channel music. I've never heard the 4.5 or 5.5, but the difference is they are ported while the others have passive radiators. I have read and been told the 5.5's really rock in the bass department and are excellent speakers for rock music. Some have said they are a touch below KLF 20's but I wouldn't know. If you're looking for the sweetest mid-range I'd look for the 5.2's. The Quartet is a nice step up in sound quality from the KG line being a three-way with a similar sized footprint but they don't quite have the bass slam of the 5.5's. As others have mentioned they have a really good bass response and really pound the room with their 2 10'' woofers. I really like them for electronic music especially. The crites Ti upgrade is definitely a good option, and they are pretty cheap as well. For the 5.5s the Marantz 1070 is more than enough power. I have mine running on a about 10W per channel class-T amp and even turning the volume knob past 30% gets into face melting territory. Jesse Thanks - yes, this room has a ceiling that rises to 12' and I have always had a hard time getting a full, warm sound in there. I don't have a lot of room to pull them out into the room; would a front port be better than a passive for this reason? Thanks for your input... Rivernuggets Posted November 28, 2015 Share Posted November 28, 2015 All the mid to larger KG models deliver good bass. The 5.5s were almost too much for me. I currently have 4.5s and they are just right for my ears. Smaller footprint but very similar bass heavy response compared to the 5.5s. The 4.2, 5.2, 4.5, 5.5 all have the Tractrix horn which I think sounds better than the exponential horns in the KG 4 and 3.5. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

They sound pretty darn good and will deliver some great bass if that is what your are are after. I have been looking for another set for myself ever since. That said the , the 4.2 is the sweetest sounding of the bunch, and the 5.2 plays loud enough to cause the nephew I gave it to for college use to get a ticket for playing it too loud at a party. Whatever you get start them out about 7 feet apart and toed in, then adjust from there. Placement pays real dividends with these babies. If one is in a corner and one isn't you will definitely have to fiddle with them. With the KG's you can put together a very nice sounding, small to mid-sized theater room on a PB&J budget and it will likely sound better than most of the junk you can pick up at the big box stores today. I won an auction on eBay not too long ago for a pair of KG 5.2's, the 2.2v center, a pair of cheap Boston rears and an M&K sub for .99 cents. I noticed the listing was local to me with no bids so I just placed a very low minimum and no one bid against me. Look at the crossovers and contemplate getting them redone, whether through Bob Crites or DeanG if he does them. I got mine from Bob.
