thebes
That's a great calculator, I've used it a lot. If you are working on stuff with 5, 6 or 7 colors, though, this Digikey one is the bomb: http://www.digikey.com/en/resources/conversion-calculators/conversion-calculator-resistor-color-code-5-band
Paducah Home Theater
I had to memorize all those back in electrical engineering school. Not as hard as it seems, becomes second nature pretty quick. Learning a scale on a guitar is much worse.

oldtimer
It's called a mnemonic. Kangaroos Play Canasta On Fine Grassy Slopes. Gotta love it.
mike stehr
Didn't Spock make one of those?
WMcD
I had to look it up. http://acronyms.thefreedictionary.com/Kings+Play+Chess+on+Fat+Girls%27+Stomachs Actually, Spock reinvented the famous E6B flight calculator. https://images.search.yahoo.com/search/images;_ylt=AwrBT7xxQGJWH9AABqxXNyoA;_ylu=X3oDMTEyYWNjYXM5BGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDQjExNzhfMQRzZWMDc2M-?p=Spock+E6b&fr=yset_ie_syc_oracle-s I was surprised to see a very 20th Century device used as a prop. So if you need a gift for a Star Trek (TOS) fan, this might be a good choice. They are about $30. Maybe Tribbles are cheaper. WMcD Edited December 5, 2015 by William F. mike stehr
Spock created a Mnemonic Memory Circuit in the episode ("The City on the Edge of Forever?") Spock and Kirk go back in time to Chicago in the 1930's to find Bones, who jumped through a time portal. Spock has to find out information about the whereabouts of Bones, and the Social Worker (Joan Collins) who has to die to make things right. Of course, Capt. Kirk is in love with her.
