DizRotus
EDIT 4/16/16 Since college basketball is done 'til next year, this thread is free to drift to the NBA playoffs. The amazing Steph Curry and Golden State have piqued my interest. It helps that fellow Spartan Draymond Green is in Steph's supporting cast It's too early to be ranked #1, the only place to go is down. But the Spartans can't help it for now. Today the Spartans play the Gators, after honoring the 2000 NCAA Champs. The beauty of basketball, compared to football, is the size of the eventual tournament gives all good teams a shot at the championship. Early losses can actually help a team's development, while not precluding participation in the tournament, which is not true of football. Sad news today regarding Spike Albrecht. Congenital hip problems have ended the career of a gutsy Wolverine. It shows wisdom and maturity beyond his years to give up basketball so that he might be able to walk when he's my age without needing hip replacements. Best wishes from a Spartan. DizRotus
MSU held off the Gators. I like the team's depth, but they haven't yet convinced me they're #1. There doesn't seem to be a Kentucky type "pro" team this season, the Tarheels were just upset by Texas and Sparty already beat #2 Kansas, so who else could be #1? DizRotus
Enjoyed an exciting game at The Palace of Auburn Hills as a birthday gift from my son. The Oakland University Grizzlies gave MSU more than they wanted. Without their best player, the #1 Spartans had to go to overtime to beat the Grizzlies 99 to 93 before more than 20,000 fans, most in Green. Kay Felder, #20 for Oakland, is the real deal. Apparently he was leading the nation in assists/game at 8.9 and second in points per game at 25.9. He scored 37 tonight with 9 assists. Denzel Valentine was in attendance walking gingerly without crutches. He had his left knee scoped yesterday. He's out 2 - 3 weeks. It could be a blessing in disguise as others will be required to step up and gain valuable experience increasing team depth after Valentine is 100%. JL Sargent
Always fun to actually go to games. UAB is close for us and we plan to see them at least a couple of times this basketball season. An exciting basketball player this year is Ben Simmons for LSU. He might be the next real phenom type player but only time will tell. Kentucky seems to be always right there at the top too. It's good to see Izzo's teams play well. Really respect him as a coach. Hockey? What's that?
DizRotus
It was somewhat surprising seeing Denzel Valentine walking without crutches the day after arthroscopic surgery on his left knee to remove some loose cartilage I wasn't doing that the day after I had my knee scoped, but then Denzel is not eligible for Medicare. DizRotus
MSU defeats Minnesota without Denzel. Who will be #1 on Monday, Oklahoma, Kansas or MSU. The rankings are meaningless, but how can a 1 loss MSU drop below Kansas? The Spartans already beat Kansas.
JL Sargent
There are so many teams out there and its hard to get an idea who really has the goods to be competitive com March. Izzo's boys do look good this year but so do many others at this point in the season. Kentucky will be a factor although so far they haven't quite figured it out. Deronb1
Big UD Flyer fan here! Been a great last 5 years or so. Really surprised Archie Miller didnt bolt for a power 5 conference. Glad he has stayed. He has built a serious program at Dayton.
DizRotus
The AP and USA Today polls are out. http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/rankings So why is Kansas at 12-1 ranked above MSU at 14-1. Clearly MSU deserves to drop from #1 after a loss to Iowa (now #19 AP & #23 USA Today) but how does Kansas move above MSU, which already beat Kansas. I guess the logic is a Kansas loss to MSU is better than an MSU loss to Iowa. Fortunately, the polls are meaningless at this time of year. As to Dayton and Archie Miller, I agree with you Deronb1. It's refreshing to see well compensated coaches stay put at good situations, rather than being enticed away to "greener pastures" to eventually be fired. JL Sargent
Go Flyers! Archie Miller is happy. That can be hard to beat. Archie has put Dayton on the map in recent times. Got what could be a great game on tonight with LSU and freshman phenom Ben Miller facing the Kentucky Wildcats 7pm central on ESPN.

JL Sargent
WVU and Coach Bobby Huggins did it last night, knocking off Kansas. It was also fun watching Alabama beat undefeated South Carolina. Who has the best basketball team in the country? Nobody knows.

wvu80
WVU and Coach Bobby Huggins did it last night, knocking off Kansas. It was also fun watching Alabama beat undefeated South Carolina. Who has the best basketball team in the country? Nobody knows. I don't know how I missed this thread the first time through. I've got a dog in this fight. And yes, my Mountaineers knocked off #1 Kansas. WVU is a much better home team than away. Nothing against WVU but I'm not sure any of their starters would make the top 6 on Kansas. KU is just loaded with pro-level talent and WVU has a unique full court press team that is unlike any other I've seen. KU averages 11 turnovers per game but WVU turned them over 22 times. I'm glad my Mountaineers won but we need to win consistently on the road in the Big 12. Next up; #2 Oklahoma, away. DizRotus
Hello IOWA! They managed to take down Mich St tonight. AGAIN. That was unpleasant for me to watch. Iowas is very good, but the Spartans did not look good. Losing to Iowa on the road was understandable. Losing so badly at home is inexcusable. Tomorrow the 16-2 Spartans play the 9-9 Badgers in Madison. They better play much better than they did on Thursday.
Deronb1
Man! Every year Dayton gets into the top 25, then loses to a scrub. Maybe wins over Davidson and GW will get em back in.
