fuzzydog
I've gone ahead and put the feet on, but I'm still struggling with the finish. It's just a bit dull and uneven. Any suggestions for how I can improve on an oil finish?

You can lightly sand once cured apply a 2nd coat then cure and rub. You can topcoat a cured oil finish. Lacquer or varnish or shellac.
fuzzydog
Just posting a completed sub picture... Don't know if I should let it tan on its own or apply another coat of finish...
derrickdj1
Very nice finish to the project FuzzyDog. Now, time to sit back a little and enjoy. You can always work on the finish if you think it can be made better in a couple of weeks. The hard part is done!
RoboKlipsch
I like how it looks. I would not darken the finish any further. If you want more pop, add a clear topcoat to make it shine. Which is a matter of preference. Meaty sub holding it's own next to the RF7

Perhaps a polish containing wax would bring out the luster you seek? https://www.amazon.com/Howard-FW0016-Feed-N-Wax-Conditioner-16-Ounce/dp/B001BKQYGW

I actually did put some of that on after the oil finish and it gave me a nice smooth luster.
fuzzydog
The Behringer EP4000 is working very well, but the fan is crazy loud. I'm thinking of swapping out the fan with this one; https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00N1Y3T9G/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A235LT0EDLFSAR Is this compatible with my amp? fuzzydog
I will say that this DIY sound group kit doesn't quite fit together as well as my first one. The first box was essentially perfect while this one is like a copy of a copy.
RoboKlipsch
Front baffles are oversized for finishing....but i have had similar experiences. Orbital sander fixes it ☺

Orbital sander fixes it ☺ All the pieces are just a little off, not just the baffle. I end up making my own baffle anyway to have one with square corners for veneering. I sure wish DIYSG would sell kits without the roundover. It is way easier to remove wood than it is to add it back.
derrickdj1
A belt sander from Harbor Frieght will carefully take down the edges for a nice fit. You can also use wood putty for small cracks as a filler. An orbital sander to finish up everything and smooth out the corners and edges. RoboKlipsch
Fuzz next time write to Erich he might be able to accomodate you on the front baffles. You sure you didnt turn a side wrong??? I have thought they were wrong then found i had turned it sideways as its hard to tell. Ive built 7 diy boxes from them and flawless except front baffles which was intentional

I checked with him before ordering, but he had just received a batch from his CNC guy and they all had roundovers. 7 minutes ago, RoboKlipsch said: You sure you didnt turn a side wrong??? I'm sure, I tried them all ways. The edges stand out just enough to catch a fingernail. Not a problem unless you're trying to veneer. The kit is still way way better than I could do on my own. fuzzydog
Anyone know if I can attach a plywood outer baffle to an MDF box? I really don't want to router MDF again. The MDF dust is unbelievable.
RoboKlipsch
My last build was the same off by a mm or 2. I think no prob gluing them together.
