R-25C ($124) vs RC-62ii ($350)

Hi guys!

So I have been slowly upgrading my quintet system since last year. First replacing the front speakers with a pair of RF-42 ii's. I now want to replace the center channel and am considering the R-25C vs RC-62ii. I know that the RC-62ii is a much better product and I was really leaning towards it since I found it brand new for $350 whereas the R-25C was $250, but I now found the R-25C brand new for $124.

So my question is, is it really more worth it to pay $226 more for the RC-62 ii or would I just be fine with the R-25C at this price point? I am not a huge audiophile, but I do enjoy good sound and consider anything an upgrade over my quintet center channel. I could afford the $226, but I'd rather save the money if I can.

Thanks!

I think this answers your question here. If you're already having doubts there will always be in the thought in the back your mom should I have gotten the RC-6ii...did I make the wrong decision. The way I see it you can either pay it now or pay later but if you pay later you'll spend more in the process

Welcome! Personally if you own the rf-42ii and are happy with them I would search for a rc-42ii to match. I owned that full 42ii theater for a year or so. It's a great little home theater for sure. The 62ii center will be better but almost overpowering. I see you getting that and then shortly wanting bigger towers. It's a slippery slope. The rf-62ii/rc-62ii to me is the sweet spot in the reference line for the money. But the 42ii's are still really good! So again, I'd look for a rc-42ii. Should be able to find one cheap.

Why would mom have anything to do with it?  :P :P :P

Your center speaker is the MOST important one in the HT system and all other speakers are anchored to it,

so I would recommend the best timbre' matched one that you can afford.

This ^^^.  (perhaps "these?")  B)

As a personal preference, I like MTM center speakers with woofers in the 6" to 7" range.

Thanks for your input guys!

Here is an RC-62ii for $229 - Link   Another one for $250 - Link

In terms of buying a used rc-62ii, this may be a dumb question, what are the failure rates on speakers? I don't want to drop $250 on it to have it crap out on me the next month or so with no warranty.

For the RF-42ii's I would match it with a RC-52ii as it uses the same tweeter and crossover point (1600hz, RF-42ii's are 1620hz). Would be the largest you "should" mate with those fronts and still be timbre' matched.

Would an rc-62ii be very overpowering compared to an rc-52ii or rc-42ii? Considering an rc-52ii is $280 and the rc-62ii is $350 or $250 used, wouldn't it just be better to get a new rc-62ii for $70 more and future proof myself if I ever do decide to get larger speakers some years down the line? If it were overpowering, aren't there ways to tool around with the receiver to lower the power coming out of the center channel?

It's not the over powering that is the issue it's the timber' is not correct so the center will have a different sound to it. The RC-52ii uses the same tweeter and crossover freq so it "should" match your towers and provide a seamless soundstage. That being said a lot of people don't seem to hear or mind different center channels, if that is case it would be personal pref so you's have to listen for yourself.

But as Scrappydue said it's a slippery slope that upgrade thing. ;)

I've owned a few used Klipsch speakers over the years.  Can't recall one pair going bad.

  • 2 weeks later...

So I have an authorized retailer offering me an rp-440c for $350 instead of the rc-62ii. Should I take this or should I stick to getting either an rc-62ii or rc-52ii? I know it doesn't match my rf-42ii's, but newer=better, right? The rc-62ii and rp-440c would be $350, just at different retailers.

My opinion. Newer equals worse in this case. 6.5" drivers, bigger horn, clearer tweeter, and front ported. I think every single thing they did to the reference premieres BESIDES aesthetics changes, were for the worse. At least for home theater. For 2 channel the 160's are pretty dang good. Get the rc-52ii or 62ii.
