Pathos
Ok, I have a question that I don't really see answered. If I missed it please send me a link to the right post. If you take a look at the 5.1.2 or 5.1.4 setups you can see where to place the 2 or 4 ceiling speakers. (According to the Dolby site). My question is if you have the RP-280FA as your 5.1.2 and you add two ceiling speakers where do you put them? You would have 5.1.4 with the two upward firing speakers on the RP-280FA and two downward firing in-ceiling speakers. Would the in-ceiling speakers be placed above the listener as in the 5.1.2 example? Or behind the listener? http://www.dolby.com/us/en/guide/dolby-atmos-speaker-setup/5-1-2-setups.html Let me know your thoughts. Thanks. Paducah Home Theater
Personally I think that would be kinda weird. If you have two upfiring Atmos speakers and want two more, then add two more upfiring speakers. That or quit upfiring and go with four ceiling speakers.
NBPK402
I agree... I don't think you should mix Atmos ceiling speakers and up firing Atmos speakers.
Jay L
Good luck finding an AVR that supports a Hybrid setup, I haven't heard of one yet. If you find one, the IC speakers would be assigned to the rear top speakers.
Pathos
Ok, thanks for the replies. If mixing them isn't a good idea, what is the preferred deployment? Upfiring or Ceiling?
007nco
I'm a big fan of direct, if the ceiling allows it. It also allows you more options in my opinion for acoustical treatments down the road should you desire. Here;'s a quick and simple video on ATMOS placement for the overheads. I was able to keep mine in a line from the front mains as well. https://youtu.be/orkz0nplRoM?list=PLCD4593F66DC5D23C Edited January 13, 2016 by 007nco

I'll be installing mine within the next few weeks, glad I have a drop ceiling makes this so much eaiser.
Pathos
Thanks guys, I am helping my father in law spec out a complete new setup after a fire destroyed his previous one. I was going to recommend the RP-280FA system. His new room would be an easy ceiling installation so I can have him skip the RP-280FAs and go right to an RF-7II system since he wouldn't need the upfiring speakers.
