Questions for RF 5.1 System

I am thinking to buy a RF 5.1 system as the gift for my father. My father lives outside of USA, where there is no Klipsch Authorized Dealer.

I like RP-250F 5.1 system. But, the RP-250F system has the dimensions, 36.10 x 7.87 x 14.82", which made it impossible for the checked luggage. Most of the airline has 62 inches policy, although I am premier gold member. Any smaller smaller floorstanding speaker? Klipsch R-24F?

I am also thinking to replace the floorstanding speaker with a bookshelf such as RP-160M. How much difference will it sound between RP-250F/R-24F and RP-160M as front speaker?

Here is my plan:

Front: RP-250F/R-24F or RP-160M, not decided yet

Center:RP-250C

Rear: RP-250S or RP-150M, not decided yet

Subwoofer: R-110SW

For receiver, I may just go for one from Yamaha's.

Any comments and recommendations?

Thank you.

First of all, welcome and good choice!

I would highly advise against the R-24F. It is not a true Reference speaker and you'll be sacrificing a large amount of quality.

If size is an issue, I'd recommend the RP-160M hands down. The RP-160M will provide you with a great sound image, and will last. If you have to go an alternative route, this would be the one.

It will also play nice with the other speakers you listed.

Receiver wise, make sure if you buy Yamaha that it is an AVENTAGE receiver.

Thank you very much. Size seems to be an issue, as I could figure out some way to put it in the checked luggage. RP-160M might be good choice here.

Do you think, RP-250S is necessary? The price is much higher than RP-150M.

I am thinking to get a RX-V477 or RX-V677 from Yamaha. Any recommendation for the receiver?

Welcome. Get the 160 for mains. 250c for center and 240s for surrounds and call it a day. The 240s and 250s are more expensive than the 150's for a reason. They have extra parts, different crossover components and odd cabinet shape. All that equates to higher price.

I second this recommendation, both to your first and last question.

Thanks, Scrappudue.

The room is 13 feet x 16 feet. Thus, I think RP-160M should be enough. Due the room size, I may only go for RP-240S, as it is $300 cheaper. Some review in Amazon complained about the sound quality of RP-160M. Any experience?

I was planning to use Yamaha RV-X477 or RV-X677. Enough power?

That's complete BS. As you can see from my sig, I've owned plenty of Klipsch models and the 160's are truly excellent. One of the finest models I've ever heard.

They respond VERY well to placement adjustments. You have complete control over bass balance(via distance to back wall), better than any Klipsch model I can remember. It may have something to do with those tractrix ports.

They probably had them configured poorly. I've heard people liken them to the RB-5's. Scrappy - if I remember right - preferred them almost as much as the P-17B's.

I really like the RB-5, but the 160's just walk all over them. They're pretty much on par with RB-75 in my opinion.

Really? That good? Might have to go take a listen to a pair since the local place actually stocks em.

There are still things that the RB-75 does better, mainly that thick, detailed midrange. They also still sound a bit bigger.

The 160 is smoother, cleaner, and much better imaging.

The RB-75 is one of my favorite models ever and I think I would still give it the slight edge, but the 160 is nipping on its heels.

If the RB-75 scores a 9.5, the RP-160 is a 9.3.

I don't have the 160s, but I now have the 150s, and I can't imagine they sound much different...160s probably have more bass and a little louder overall.

I believe the OP can get away with the 150s as mains since there is a sub in the mix...and it might make for a more seamless front soundstage with the same size drivers. These 150s can get surprisingly loud yet still remain composed..I can vouch for that ;).

It's too bad Klipsch no longer makes center channels with 6" drivers..they have thier reasons I guess. I wasn't advising that he choose the 150s over the 160s, just that if he HAD to, the 150s IMO are a capable choice.

I will say this tho, these 150s are LEAPS and BOUNDS over the R-15Ms I had before :)...

Not at all surprising. (I know guys, I know...I'm really rough on the "reference" series...but do you really blame me?)

I still question whether or not they're (the 160M's) as good as the RB-75's that Matt indicates - though, that should resonate a bit with what Scrappy has said in that the 160 is almost as good as the P-17B and preferred it to a certain degree.

Personally, I'm quite content with my 5's for now.

The R-110sw is better.

R-10SW is "reference."

R-110Sw is " reference premier."

And Klipsch seriously doesn't understand how confusing their new lineup numbers and lines are confusing. Smdh.

Matt is correct in his recommendation.

Thanks, Matt and Lbiza. I think, I will stick to reference premier then.
