mustang guy
This is a very preliminary post. Thank you yamahaSHO for inspiring me. So far I have the following WinISD for the sub. I'm thinking a 24" sonotube. With that size, the sub will be about just under 3' tall. Driver Dayton Audio RSS390HO. Probable amp will be Yung SD500. Thoughts? jason str
If you have room between the driver & vents try a 2-3" layer of upholstery batting sandwiched between some sturdy but open weave fabric. Never done this in a tube like cabinet and you would need to router out some type of open but sturdy round bracing to hold the fabric/batting in place on both sides. I think it adds a bit more detail to the sound, you could experiment for yourself and if you don't like it will come out easy enough. Fizik
I have the 18" version of that subwoofer being delivered tomorrow. From everything i read they sound fantastic. So I suspect your build will as well.
wvu80
I have that exact 15" driver and almost the exact same plate amp. I have the Yung SD500 w/bass boost. Bass boost is important for a sealed box, more later. My driver and enclosure was the PE Reference 15" bundle. That HO (high output) driver is rated for 800 watts RMS. There is also a HF version which is rated at 500 watts. My sealed 3 cuft enclosure with the HO driver doesn't seem to miss the extra 300 watts as my sub sounds tremendous, even though I know there is more there than I use. Yung SD 500 plate amp: All Yung SD models have a filter (I can never remember which is high pass or low pass) which has a cut off at 30 Hz. In practicality my sub digs down to about 20 Hz, but not much below that. I get excellent chest thump power in my small room. Specifications: • Measured power output: 500 watts RMS into 4 ohms @ < 1.0% THD • Signal to noise ratio (at rated power): >90 dB • Input sensitivity (@ low level): 210 mV/50 Hz • Input sensitivity (@ high level): 3.0V/50 Hz • Low pass adjustment: 40 Hz to 200 Hz • Phase adjustment: Continuously variable from 0º (normal) to 180º (reverse) • Power requirements: Switchable, 115/230 VAC, 50/60 Hz • Dimensions: 9-7/8" W x 10-5/8" H x 3" D; Cutout dimensions: 8-7/8" W x 9-3/4" H. I never know how to correctly read specs, but it looks like that amp cuts off at 40 Hz. For a ported design the non-bass boost is recommended. For sealed the bass boost is needed. I don't know about the sonotube design but it looks like you are going for 21 Hz, and ported. You might want to double-check and see if that Yung 500 SD will dig that deep in your design. Cool project. I don't know what you paid for what, but you should get pretty good economical thump-for-your-buck. yamahaSHO
Looking forward to seeing the project take shape.
mustang guy
Look at the image above called Cone Excursion. Note the signal used of 500watts. As you can see, the cone reaches xmax in that size and that tuning of that enclosure. For that reason and for the cost, I thought it best to stick with a 500 watt amp. Using boost would likely cause xmax to be reached at substantially lower output levels. I think the 500 watt amp is a nice size for this driver/enclosure combination. As for the 40Hz question, that is a low pass variable filter. In other words, only frequencies below it get through notwithstanding the actual curve of the filter which could be anything between 6 and 24db/octave. The fc of the amp is 20Hz. I am looking forward to the build, but there are things that keep popping up. Hey Dave, do you like Guinness?

wvu80
Hey Dave, do you like Guinness? No, not a beer drinker at all. I used to be a pop drinker but the doctor wanted me to get away from the carbonated stuff, so now I'm a (no kidding) Kool Aid drinker! But if someone else is drinking it doesn't bother me. Are you having a speaker testing Get-together at the Speaker Ranch? Edited February 19, 2016 by wvu80
mustang guy
Thanks Carl. It's good to be back. Dave, I have finally installed my Guinness tap. My wife and kids bought it for me back in August, and tomorrow I pick up the keg at Smoker Friendly. I call this kegerator my pregnant cat. It's a long story. Suffice it to say, buying a person a kegarator and Guinness tap handle does not a Guinness kegerator make. I had to buy: Stout spout for my Guinness handle Euro U-coupler for Euro Stout beer tapping Nitrogen Tank + fill charge CO2 tank + fill charge High pressure line High pressure Nitrogen regulator High pressure CO2 regulator Gas blender for 75% N / 25% CO2 I could have bought a good used car for what dispensing a little 5L keg is gonna be. Hell, I thought hunting and fishing were expensive pass times. I put this right up there with sponsoring race cars. LOL

Seriously Craig, nice setup. Do you have it installed at the Speaker Ranch or is it at home? I'm surprised you would pick up the keg at Smoker Friendly instead of one of the local beer distributors. Is that because you are a private citizen instead of a licensed establishment? Edited February 19, 2016 by wvu80

Capital distributing is the only one that sells Guinness, and they only sell to re-sellers. That's Smoker's Friendly or 36th St Carry out. "Give your loved one a pregnant cat. mustang guy
I don't know how this thread went from a sono-sub-diy thread to a guinness kegerator from hell, or as I fondly call it my pregnant cat. Yesterday, I put a keg in that bad boy! Yay!!! Shit, what?!?!?!? The frickin coupler won't go in the keg? WHAT?!?!?! Kegerator sold me a U coupler but sent a D coupler. This all started on my birthday in August last year when my family who loves me and is thoughtful bought me a kegerator and a Guinness tap handle. The kegerator guy said sorry and that in 3 business days I will have my coupler. On that day, my pregnant cat will finally have it's litter. Does anybody want a kitten? Marvel
Wish I was paying a visit! The last I had on tap was during a trip to visit relatives in Limerick, IE, about 8 years ago. Bruce
