Heresy Stands

Recommended Posts

I recently picked up a pair of Heresys. They're '78's with the flat riser. The speakers sound great but I just couldn't handle the soundstage being so low. I even tried tilting them back like the models with the slant riser. Still no good. I knew I would lose some bass but I would be running a sub. They had to come up. Decided on a 12" high stand. The stand would be 1/16" smaller than the base of the Heresy.

Ran some birch ply through the table saw.

Made some templates taking into account the thickness of the ply so the legs would be the same dimension. I used a 3" hole saw for the radius.

Traced the template onto the ply cutting just shy of my line.

I dust my patterns with this to keep them from moving around.

I used SEM rattle can primer. Quick and easy. Plus I got rid of 3 old cans.

320 on the D/A between coats.

Here you can see the first coat of tan coming through the black second layer. Gives you a good indication of high and low spots while also showing how far you've gone.

Third coat is grey.

At this point I used a dry guide coat. Basically a powdered graphite rubbed on with the sponge applicator. You can also use flat black dusted on.

The guide coat will show everything. Highs, lows, and when youre flat.

I mixed up some black base with some clear and hardener to make a single stage.

Shot the inside first.

Then I quickly flipped it over and shot the outside so everything would flow together. You'll notice that the floor is still covered in dust. I cracked the garage door and had a side door open. If you make sure your part is clean and you don't have a lot of airflow you can get away with it.

They're damn near flawless.

You are a hell of a craftsman and a top notch photographer. Nice work and thank you for sharing. I look forward to seeing what you do next.

A pair of Heresy's and a sub are a great combination. Being a person with 3 pairs, I can say that with confidence. A couple of days ago, I did this to a pair in my mini-woodshop:

They fit nicely up there, and they are inverted so the tweeter is closest to the ear, the squaker is next closest and the woofer is coupled with the ceiling at 2 3/4". It isn't perfect, but being a 7' high shelf, it wasn't being used for anything but clutter anyway.
